Isabel sat on the counch watching March of the Penguins hoping a movie about Antartica would help her not think about how hot it was. It wasn't working.

"Yeah, I get that." Xander rubs the back of his neck. "It sucks that this is messing with something you're so into. I mean, I'm just guessing at what I might be decent at, with this college thing. You've known you wanted to be a cop since... I dunno - could you walk yet?"

"Pretty much forever, yeah." Bridge shrugs. "But now I'm wondering if it was really even my decision to join SPD to begin with."

Xander blinks. "Like that got lab-accidented into your DNA too?" Then he coughs. "Or, ah, yeah. The slightly saner idea that maybe it was your folks' idea more than yours, you mean?"

"Yeah," Bridge says. "According to the... stuff, encouraging us to join SPD was one of the conditions in return for SPD coming up with cover careers for our parents after they left."

"If they thought it'd be a good place for their kids, why would they leave?" Xander asks. "Uh, not that I figure you'd have an answer for that, just thinking out loud."

"Well, I think the thought was that since we all had these powers, they could be useful for that whole world-defending thing?"

"Yeah, I get that part. But why get cover ID's and go live normal lives if the plan was to send you guys back when you grew up? Why not just stay with SPD themselves?"

"Sky's parents stayed," Bridge says. "His dad was a Ranger, actually."

It must've been a long time ago, if Sky's dad was still alive, Xander recalls Bridge saying on the night Z'd found the picture of their parents together.

"So not necessarily the safest place to try to raise kids, maybe, huh?"

"Not exactly, no." Bridge admits. "Sky has his dad's helmet, actually. They gave it to him, after he... it's really kind of creepy."

"Like those full-face thingies Conner and Anders were wearing at Caritas? They gave that to a little kid?" Xander raises an eyebrow. "That's... okay I guess I can't talk from creepy, 'cause dude, Sunnydale. But still."

"Yeah," Bridge nods. "He kept it in our room at the Academy. Not, like, out where people could see it? But it was still *there*."

"LIke I said, I can't talk from morbid considering I grew up in a town where people raise their dead relatives from the grave and try to build-a-girfriend for them, among other healthy ways of coping with loss," Xander points out. "But I can see where your parents might've thought it was a good idea to let you grow up somewhere safer than SPD."

"You may have a point," Bridge admits, only somewhat grudgingly.
