Second floor common room [Evening]

Anakin had spent most of the day ~~brooding~~ meditating and replaying the trip to Coruscant in his mind.

The thoughts it had led to had been entirely too depressing.

That's why he had migrated up to the second floor common room and commandeered the television set.

Not that the last Space Battles prequel was any less depressing, but he could keep himself entertained by mocking the terrible technology and equally terrible dialogue.

"They say that a thousand monkeys with a thousand typewriters could produce the complete works of Shakespeare over time," Rory said thoughtfully. "So maybe like ten monkeys locked in a room for two weeks produced that?"

Anakin nodded. "Maybe less."

"What have you been up to today?" Rory asked, poking him in the side because she could.

"Meditating," Anakin said. "Taking some of Obi-Wan's advice."

"Advice?"

Anakin swallowed hard. "On how to start letting go," he said quietly.

Rory studied the screen.

"The costumes in this are kind of silly, aren't they?" she asked quietly a moment later.

Avoidance and repression? Rory? Don't be silly.

Anakin gave her an understanding look and shifted a little closer. "They are," Anakin agreed. "And that's coming from someone who lives on Coruscant."

"Look, I'm not going to sleep with my hair done up like that," Rory said seriously. "That is like, the most uncomfy-looking ensemble ever."

"But it glows in the dark," Anakin said. "And it has sharp pointy things. What's not to love?"

"I need luminescent clothing," Rory decided.

Anakin snickered. "Noted."

"So I can read with the lights out," Rory explained. "Many great people used to read by candlelight. I could read by nightgownlight."

"That's quite the mental image," Anakin teased.

"You're just jealous because I'll be reading by the light of my nightie and you'll be forced to like, use a lamp," Rory tsked.

Anakin bit back a response about how he could use her nightie to read by. "I'll manage," he said instead.

Rory smirked, because it's possible that she had intentionally baited him. "I could have a whole glow-in-the-dark wardrobe, ranging from winter jammies to, like, summer when I don't wear much to bed. Reading is year-round, after all."

Mean, mean Rory.

Anakin threw a potato chip at her.

For no reason.

Really.

Rory pouted at him. "Don't waste snacks," she admonished.

Don't be mean, Anakin thought at her, turning his attention back to the screen. "Oh, here comes the part where the puppy gets fed to the snake and Dark Helmet loses it," he said.

"Ick, I can never watch this part," Rory said, making a face and turning away.

Coincidentally turning away towards Anakin.

Which, coincidentally, was the way she'd behave with any male friend with whom she watched a scary movie. Mean? Who's being mean? she thought at him.

"It's not that bad," Anakin said with a grin, giving her shoulder a comforting squeeze.

Just like he would with any girl he'd be watching a scary movie with.

You are, he replied. With the nighties and the public and me being not able to respond like I'd want to. His mental voice was teasing. Mean, mean, mean.

Would you rather I didn't wear nighties? Rory thought at him, trying to hide a smile. I understand if the idea of me in nighties offends you. I'll just not wear them. Is that better?

"It is too," she replied, peeking at the screen and making a face.

Anakin was turning red for no reason at all. Honestly.

"It's totally fake," he said. "Look. You can tell."

"It's still gross," Rory replied, grinning.

In fact, I could not wear a nightie tonight....
