Outside The Dorms, Thursday Afternoon

In an attempt to enjoy the day, Janet had dragged a blanket outside, on the dorm grounds, and was laying down on it, making notations in a binder. She had a covered pitcher of lemonade and a filled glass next to it that she was slowly drinking.

"Well, I've already read it in English," pointed out Elizabeth, slightly defensively.

"If you think I'm making fun of you for being an overintellectual geek, you might want to consider that I really can't talk," said Janet, grinning.

Elizabeth leant over to see the equations and scribblings and snickered. "Nope. Not in the slightest," she said.

"I've been making a lot of progress this summer, though," said Janet.

"That's good," said Elizabeth. "I won't even begin to ask you how though!"

"I'm sure you don't want the full explanation of all the work I've been doing," said Janet, giggling. "I mean, I could tell you about all of it, but I'll be nice."

"If you did, I'd just start speaking in Italian again for the rest of the day," threatened Elizabeth, grinning as she glanced around before quickly kissing Janet again.

"I don't really need you to speak English all the time to understand you," said Janet, reaching out to take Liz's hand. "I took enough French in--you know, school before now--and enough Latin here that I can figure out most of what you're saying. But English is still easier for me."

"Russian?" suggested Elizabeth, giggling as she laced her fingers with Janet's. "I can normally understand the basics of what you're saying; I did AP bio the first time around myself."

"No Russian, please!" exclaimed Janet, laughing. She swept her thumb along the back of Liz's hand. "I do try to keep it at a level I know you can follow along with."

Elizabeth giggled, shivering slightly. "No Russian," she promised.

"You're just too multilingual for me," said Janet. "Even if I have been studying the course materials from Professor Dream on my own time." She looked up at Liz curiously. "Hey, have you ever met Peter's sister? You know, his younger sister, the school counselor?"

Elizabeth shook her head. "I make it a policy to stay clear of counselors who don't go by the name of Kate Heightmyer," she said. "And it's a pretty big step that I go near her really."

"Peter's throwing a birthday party for her, and he wanted to invite you along," said Janet. "He asked me because, um--" She looked down at the blanket and started pulling at a loose thread. "I went to see her a couple of times. She's kind of nice, actually."

"Sure, I'll come," said Elizabeth. She reached across to cover Janet's hand with her own. "Honey, that's nothing to be ashamed of," she said softly. "And you don't have to tell me that at all."

"I know I don't have to," said Janet quietly. She tilted her head to meet Liz's eyes. "And--things are kind of complicated with her anyway. She found out about me."

Elizabeth's eyes widened slightly. "Oh," she said softly.

Janet nodded. "Lay down here with me?" she asked, stretching one arm out and pillowing her head on it. "We can talk more quietly and NFBly that way."

"Sure," said Elizabeth quietly, mimicking how Janet was lying and resting one hand gently on Janet's hip.

"She caught me coming out of Daniel's apartment," said Janet softly. "With my suitcase. She thought I was a real teenager until then."

Elizabeth winced. "Yeah, and you coming out of a teacher's apartment would not look good," she said.

Janet nodded. "She told Daniel she wouldn't turn him in if he resigned right then."

Elizabeth's eyes were wide. "Oh," she exclaimed softly.

"I couldn't let him do that," said Janet, sighing. "We ended up fighting about me telling her, or him finding another job. So I told her."

Elizabeth gently stroked Janet's hip. "I'm sorry, honey," she murmured.
