Third Floor Common Room, Tuesday morning

Walter was cooking breakfast and making a list. So far he had a remarkable array of eggs cooked in different styles, a loaf's worth of toast, far too many sausages, and a few boxes of cereal sitting out next to a gallon of milk.

You'd think he was cooking for more than himself. While he worked, a small black puppy scampered at his feet apparently trying to stab a paper ball with a pencil held in his teeth.

The list was for Mary Poppins, who had somehow thought that he'd volunteered as her Teacher's Assistant.

He knew there had to be more than that. He'd keep working on it.

"You're welcome," Walter said with a smile. "How have you been? I haven't seen you in a while."

Meanwhile, Pup wandered over to sniff Tyler's ankles.

"Other than my roommate getting sent to the clinic by some jerk's idea of a prank? Could be worse," Tyler said. "I haven't been all that social lately."

He reached down to scratch Pup's head. "This your dog?," he asked, clearly a little bothered by the extra, red eyes.

"Prank?" Walter frowned, thinking of last week's so-called pranks. "This wasn't Jamie's doing, was it?"

Pup licked Tyler's hand and wagged hard enough to send his rear end sliding on the modded because I don't know the surface tile.

"And yeah, that's Pup. He's well-trained, so the only thing you have to worry about is the face licking."

"Sounds like a menace," Tyler said. "Might put someone's eye out, with the wagging."

His face turned serious. "And yes, Jamie, according to Pip. Is Nadia okay?"

Walter nodded, his expression chilly thinking of what Jamie had done to Nadia. "She is now. Now I know how people must have felt after what happened at the beginning of the summer."

He pressed his lips tightly and sighed before shaking it off. "But she's alright now, and Jamie is back to whatever passes for normal around here."

Tyler had missed what had happened at the beginning of summer, but he let it pass. "Normal for him, you mean," he said. "Still. Can never trust someone with a side like that. Might come out anytime."

Not that he was speaking from personal experience.

"I think it's more complicated than that, but yeah, I'd be happier if Nadia would get a new roommate."

Not that Walter had any issues about someone claiming to be himself who could happily hurt people he cared about.

"Have you talked to her about it?"

"She hasn't really wanted to talk about it since we confronted Jamie," Walter said with a grimace. "She says she likes her roommate and I know better than to try to change her mind on some things."

"It doesn't surprise me that she'd be like that," Tyler nodded. "She can take care of herself, anyhow. Kicked my ass once."

Walter smiled proudly at that. "You know, we haven't had a chance to spar yet."

"True," Tyler said. "Seems a shame. You doing anything tomorrow?"

"Sparring with you, I think," Walter said, grinning. "I have the lunch shift at the restaurant, so we can do it in the morning or evening. Whichever is convenient for you."

"Morning's good," Tyler said. "I'll go down to the gym after breakfast."

"Brilliant! I'll meet you there."

"It's a plan," Tyler said, and he noticed Walter's pencil because the mun wants him to know about Min. "What are you writing?"

Walter turned the list around to show Tyler. "The new Creature Languages teacher decided I'm her TA and she wants a list of pets and their people."

Tyler nodded, reading down the list. "That Angela Chase girl has a cat," he syupplied. "Minerva. I watched her for a while this summer, seems like a pretty normal tabby."

Walter added Angela and Minerva to the list along with Abercrombie and Fitch, now that he'd remembered them. "Thanks. I'm guessing there are pets that don't get out much, like fish, too."

"Probably," Tyler agreed. "Do you think fish have a language? They always struck me as pretty dumb."

"I never expected lobsters to have a language, but they do," Walter pointed out. "It makes serving them at the restaurant a bit of an interesting thing when they ask not to be taken out of the tank."

"That doesn't sound like a lot of fun," Tyler said. "Can't imagine what it would be like to work in a slaughterhouse and speak cow."

"I'm planning to miss the cow unit if Miss Poppins offers it. I'll eat my hypocrisy rare on that one."

And he wasn't even going to think about the philosophical and practical applications of calling vampires monsters for doing something similar.

"Better than not being able to eat at all," Tyler agreed, turning back to his breakfast.

"You'll have no argument from me." Walter looked around at the influx of people coming for food and back at Tyler. "If you'll excuse me, it seems my plan may have worked a bit too well."
