Fourth Floor Common Room: Thursday Night

After coming back from Pizza Planet, Blair took a seat on the floor in the common room and started copying his notes for Marie. He was humming a song quietly and munching on a slice of pizza.

Evie choked. "Naked?" Then, after a moment, because she can't *not* ask, "Do, do you mean shirtless, because Alec--" And again with the blushing, when would it go away, "--was, um, shirtless the first day, and no one cared. Or rather, I mean, no! Detention. For nothing? You're making that up. I hope."

"Ohhh, drat." And this girl sounded so miserable, Evie completely believed her. "Right, then. I'm going to... hide by Blair. Umm. You'll tell them it was an accident, won't you?" She paused. "Oh, and I'm Evie. Carnahan."

"Oh, that's just not fair! No one mentioned gnomes before," Evie protested, dismayed. "What are they hammering? And, and, should I buy ear plugs? Do they hammer things at night? I mean, I should like to meet one if it was daylight, but... wait, why am I being careful of them?"

Time to open the notebook and start writing this stuff down again.

"They tend to do some damage to the ol' toesies," she says. "There's sometimes bruising. One guy had his toenail fall right off and it wouldn't grow back."

Entertained, Evie said, "Ewwwwwww. I saw a man without any toes on his feet begging in Cairo, once. You could still see the toe-bones, but the rest had rotted away. Leprosy!"

"Oh, no. It's not really easy to catch. Do they not have leprosy here?" Evie wrote down all the things about the gnomes with the hammers, and said, "Although, the first symptoms are not being able to feel your extremities." She held out her toes to wiggle them, looking satisfied. "So that's all right, then."

"We haven't had it yet, but give it time," Jaye says. "Though if a gnome hits your foot hard enough to lose feeling and you don't know it? Like if they get you in your sleep? You might want to get that checked out."

"Goodness." Evie wrote this down too, shaking her head. "They really didn't include *anything* useful in that handbook, did they? What use are maps, if you don't know that gnomes could attack you in your sleep?" She sighed, then added, "It's very thoughtful of you to help me out like this. I'm trying *very* hard to catch up. For instance, did you know that aspirin can cause sex madness?" she asked, whispering the last two words.

"I had no idea until the First Aid class on Tuesday." Evie shook her head vehemently. "I'm so very glad there are other painkillers available now. Imagine what would have happened to me if I'd kept taking it, not knowing!"
