4th Floor Common Room, After Classes

It's been a while since Isabel felt like cooking for the masses, but the first day of school seems like reason enough. After Interstellar Relations, she made a quick handwaved trip to town to pick up supplies. Now the music is playing and she's making chicken parm and pasta for whoever wants it.

Teddy looked away from her. "Skrulls are hatched. I was hatched."

"Really?" Isabel asked, genuinely interested. "I've never heard the term the before. Do you mind explaining it a bit more? I don't want to be pushy so it's okay if you don't."

"Hatched, as in from an egg."

He shrugged apologetically. "Sorry. I don't really know all that much myself. I only found out a short time ago that I wasn't human."

"Huh, maybe we're distant cousins then?" she smiled. "So what does being not human mean for you? Because I'd never know if you hadn't said anything. Are you trying to find out more? If so, see if you can get into Special Collections in the library. You wouldn't believe what they have back there."

He laughed quietly. "Yeah, apparently my Dad's race looked close enough to human for me to end up looking like this."

"Plus I get this..." He paused and changed, "...from my Mom's side."

"How can I get access to the Special Collections?" Teddy asked with Isabel's voice.

"That would really freak me out if I didn't already know a shapeshifter," Isabel said. "But I can see where it could be useful."

"To get into Special Collections you'll need a signed pass from a teacher," she explained. "Then bring it to the librarian or the library aides and they'll escort you in."

He changed back to himself and tilted his head to the side, looking thoughtful.

"I'll have to check that out."

"It's a useful resource. Just be prepared for what you might find. It isn't always what you want to hear," she said quietly.

"As long as I don't learn that I'm betrothed to anyone, after all that's happened so far? I think this can only go uphill." Billy would kill him if that happened.

Isabel facepalmed. "Absolutely. No betrothals. Surprise betrothals are very, very bad. I know this personally."

Teddy winced in sympathy.

"I think my boyfriend would go nuts if it happened. Which would lead to an intergalactic war. And only bad things could come of it."

"No intergalactic wars. That would definitely be bad," she nodded. "Last year I found out I was betrothed to a guy that I'd spent the last ten years thinking of as a second brother. After a month of looking to spark a romance and then being really squicked by it, we said the hell with it. As far as we're concerned it off." Isabel smiled happily, "I've been dating another student here for the last three months."

Teddy laughed. "You know that we lead charmed lives when we have to actively worry about being betrothed."

"Who are you dating?"

"Trust me, that's one thing I could have lived with out," Isabel said. "I'm dating Greg Sanders, he's another junior. He lives down on the third floor but you'll see him around, he comes up to visit a lot."

He shook his head, unable to place the name. "I haven't met him yet, but then again, I haven't met a lot of people here."

"We should start a self help group for aliens, warning them about the dangers of arranged marriages and galactic empires," Teddy said.

"Trust me, there are people that came in at the beginning of the summer that I still haven't met." Isabel shrugged, "You'll meet him and everyone else eventually. It seems like everyone passes through a common room at one point or another."

"Michael was my brother's second in command. So I think our betrothal was less about empire building and more about rewarding loyalty or something. Which really annoys me when I think about it."

Teddy made a face at the thought of Isabel's betrothal.

"Ugh, I hope they don't do things like that at home."

"Read up in Special Collections and find out. If we have to, there's plenty of places to hide you on the island."

Teddy smiled warmly. "I might just take you up on that offer if looking through the library ends badly."

"Sounds like a plan then," Isabel smiled. "But now I'd better get back to getting more food prepared for my husband who will be home shortly the hungry hordes. It was nice meeting you."
