Marie was tired of being cooped up in her room. She still wasn't sure she was up to the insanity of a common room, so she decided to take advantage of the absolutely gorgeous night and head up to the roof.

Marie frowned, looking from Schrodinger to Zuko and back.

"We're talking to you," she said.

"You talk to someone on the phone," Schrodinger said. "That doesn't mean that they're there with you."

"Well, no," Marie agreed. "But you're talking to them through technology. I can see you in front of me."

"What if you were to turn around and not face me?" Schrodinger asked. "If you have your backs to me, you don't know that I'm here. Maybe I wouldn't be."

"This is stupid," Zuko ground out. Things already didn't make sense without someone being confusing on purpose.

"Or is it just very, very smart?" Schrodinger asked.

"Definitely stupid," Zuko said, sounding determined.

Marie was frowning and nodding. "It doesn't make sense," she said. "If you weren't here, you couldn't talk to us. Unless you were using hidden microphones or something."

Schrodinger's smile grew. "So you observe me here, therefore I am here?"

Zuko's scowl deepened in proportion to Schrodinger's smile. "You're here if I burn you and it hurts."

"Now you're taking assumptions about my pain threshold," Schrodinger said.

"I'm taking assumptions about my own skills," Zuko corrected, his fingers itching but he didn't want to get called into the principal's office again.

"You claim that you'll burn me without knowing anything about me," Schrodinger said. "I don't doubt you could make fire, but you've seen enough people in this school with abillities. How do you know I'm not fireproof?"

Marie had been in the common room when Zuko and Bel met. She sighed. "This is a ridiculous conversation," she decided, frowning at Schrodinger. "You're here, you're talking to us and that's that."

"So you define the certainty of me being here by the fact that I am talking to you? Or because you can see that I'm here?"

"Both."

"Suppose I have a video teleconfrence machine," Schrodinger said. "Picture and sound. Or some sort of ultra-futureistic holographic device. Then you could see me and talk to me, but I'd still not be there."

"No idea. It's just theoretical."

"How about you back up your theory that you aren't here by just leaving completely? That way we'll really believe you," Zuko suggested.

"Leave? Without being introduced and introducing myself? That'd be rude."
