Marie was tired of being cooped up in her room. She still wasn't sure she was up to the insanity of a common room, so she decided to take advantage of the absolutely gorgeous night and head up to the roof.

"The most important part," Conner said. "Well, okay, the most important part was getting to help all those people, and the powers kind of helped with that. I'd do it anyway, now, but the way I was back then, I needed to be forced, to figure it out."

"Well, see," Marie said. "It wasn't the powers themselves that made you a good person. So not having them doesn't change that at all."

"You really think so?" Conner asked after a minute's silence.

Marie nodded. "Yeah, I do. It's kind of the opposite of me, I think. Even though my powers can hurt people, it doesn't make me a bad person."

Conner wasn't sure if Marie could see his face in the dark, but he was wearing a huge, pleased grin. "Exactly. If you were a bad person, you wouldn't be worried about hurting people." He laughed softly. "This is so weird. Last week I was trying to make you feel better about having powers, and now you're trying to make me feel better about not having any."

"Never a dull moment around here, right?"

"Sure keeps me on my toes, that's for sure."

Marie smiled. "LIfe is never going to be normal again, is it?"

"As much as I thought it could be? Nah." Conner tucked his knees up under his chin and rocked back and forth, contemplating. "And now, I think I'm okay with that."

"I remember how freaked out I was by everything at the beginning of the summer," Marie said. "Now it doesn't seem to matter."

"I met you that first day. I remember. Who knows? Maybe we'll be the best-prepared kids, ever, for the real world when we graduate."

"That's right," Marie remembered. "You helped me carry my luggage."

"You sorry you let me?" he asked lightly, teasing.

"Nah, I'm just sorry I agreed to go on a date with you," she teased back.

Conner gave her a mock wounded look. "I hear that from more girls . . ."
