The gym, after CV2

Nadia didn't feel up to going and finding her friends and their parents just yet. She was still feeling weird after her argument with Pippi the night before, and the fact that she knew she wouldn't have anyone there for her just made her less than enthusiastic about the whole Parents' Weekend thing.

So she headed to the gym and grabbed a quarter-staff, and was currently moving very slowly through several defensive moves, taking care to remain as calm and focused on exactly how she was moving as she could.

"You won't talk about your problems, my problems are stupid, and neither of us wants to hurt each other and so we're kinda stuck with no way to resolve all this crap," Cally said.

"Would you cut that out?! Your problems aren't stupid. You aren't stupid. You're kind of a bitch sometimes, and I still want to know why the hell you're trying to upset me, but sparring isn't going to solve any of that."

"I'm trying because everything would be infinitely easier if we hated each other, even if it would suck, but then I wouldn't have to worry about these stupid. Frakking. Feelings."

"You think that would fix anything?" Nadia was suddenly not so sure on the "Cally isn't stupid" front. "You think hating people is fun or easy, or that caring about someone is something that needs to be fixed?"

"I don't know," Cally said. "I don't know anything about what the hell is going on, why nothing is easy, why things can't just work out like they should. I really, really like Mac and she's probably the best thing to happen to me in a long time and I seem to be trying to screw that up and I don't know why!"

"We're in high school, Cally. Not everything is supposed to make sense. And I'd rather if you'd stop trying to manipulate me into solving your problems."

"You think I'm manipulating you?" Cally stared.

"You're trying to upset me so that we'll hate each other so that you can feel better. And until I kept insisting, you refused to tell me what you were doing. Yes, I think that's manipulation."

Cally froze. Nadia was completely right. She dropped her head, staring at the floor as hard as she could.

"Shit," she said. "I... dammit."

"Look, you want to know what's been going on with me? I got into a fight with Pippi last night. And I really don't want to be angry at you, too, at the same time. I'd really rather that we can just be friends."

"I'm sorry," Cally whispered. She was trying not to cry.

Cally let out a sputter of a laugh. "Yeah, I think I can avoid that."

"Good. Thank you. Are you okay?"

Wiping at her eyes with the back of her hand, Cally nodded. "Strangely better," she said. "Which is totally frakked up."

"I don't think it is. Sometimes just realizing what's going on and what's wrong helps."

"Yeah," Cally said, nodding. "Do me a favor, though? I mean, not that I think you would, but... don't tell Mac, okay?"

"It's not my secret to tell. But I think you should."

Cally nodded. "Yeah, I think you're right. I just... wanted to know what exactly I was feeling before I did, you know?"

Nadia nodded. "Good luck."

"Thanks," Cally said. She shook out her hands a little. "You want to talk about Pippi at all?"

Nadia shrugged. "It just seems like she's always talking down to me lately. Apparently she has problems with the fact that I went to learn how to be a spy, so now I know things that she doesn't necessarily know."

"That doesn't make any sense."

"I never said that it did. She said she hopes I never get a chance to even be a spy, and every time I try to tell her about something, she starts looking at me like I'm an idiot. And I'm not. I know what I'm talking about."
