Saturday Evening, Third Floor Common Room

"Stupid power," Dawn grumbled, lighting the candle on the table near her, then got up to turn off the television and overhead light. The power (at least in the common room) had been intermittently annoying all day, and it was back in the annoying period.

So she was now reading by candlelight and pretending she was Abe Lincoln.

"Hi," he replied, putting his arms around her a little tighter for a hug. "Sorry, I didn't mean to totally scare you. I was going for a little scare."

"Scary clown book," Dawn explained, taking the hug happily. "It was eating people."

"Out of all the books you have, you chose to read that one in the dark?" Sam grinned at her. "You might be even braver than I am."

"It wasn't dark when I started reading," Dawn whined a little. "And then I got sucked into the story and couldn't put the book down."

"Ah, now that's the kind of thinking I can understand," Sam said, laughing. He leaned over and kissed her on the cheek before finally pulling away to retrieve the book. "Is it bad that my first thought when the power went out was that someone or something had deliberately knocked it out?"

"Bad? Um, no. And actually, an awful lot of people have been thinking that way." She leaned back over the couch and squinted, watching Sam try and find her book. "I, of course, was not at all suspicious or worried."

"Oh, of course not. Because you are a pillar of sensibility and not being suspicious," Sam teased, stretching a little to reach behind the couch. It's possible Dawn was getting a nice, if dark, view.

Dawn sighed happily as she continued to watch Sam. "I'm glad you recognize that."

Sam smirked. "I pay attention to these things, because I'm well-trained like that." He made a little noise of triumph before emerging with the book. "Here you go."

Dawn took her book and didn't at all pout because she'd lost her view. "Thanks. And you're very observant."

"So, I have a random question." That was probably better asked in the dark.

"Ooh, I like random questions. Do I get to give a random answer?" Sam asked, grinning.

"I think you're gonna have to," she snickered, remembering her conversation with GOB. "So, hypothetically, you own a brothel. If I lose my mind and want to rent one of your employees for an hour, do you let me?"

Sam blinked. And then stared at Dawn. And then blinked some more. "Um. I...is this a hypothetical brothel of boys, or a hypothetical brothel of girls. Because that has a big effect on the answer."

Dawn rolled her eyes and realized she should have expected that answer. "It's your brothel. I guess you'd have to tell me that part. I was thinking boys, though."

"Well, if it's a brothel of boys, I probably wouldn't," he said. "Because I'd like to think that if you really felt the need to hire a guy for something, you could just come to me and...not like, rent me, but ask me to...y'know, do whatever it is you want."

It was possible Dawn had never been so grateful for a blackout before. She was blushing so hard at that thought that she'd be lucky if Sam didn't see it. "But remember, I've lost my mind?"

Sam was starting to get the idea that he didn't want to know where this conversation came from. "Does that mean you'd be renting a guy for something crazy? I probably still wouldn't let you do it, because crazy means needing extra protection, and if you think I'd leave that sort of thing to the kind of guy who works in a brothel, you're already kind of nuts."

"No, I meant that I'd have to be crazy to rent someone when I have you available," she explained, "but wow, go you with the way right answer."

"You would have to be crazy to rent someone else, especially since I can't guarantee that I wouldn't turn into a caveman and go all growly on their ass if they tried anything with you." Sam gave a little embarrassed cough and glanced down. Maybe the darkness really could come in handy.

"You'd go caveman and growly over me?" Dawn threw herself at Sam. "Really?"

Getting an armful of Dawn was definitely not a bad thing, Sam decided. "Yeah, I would."

She aimed a kiss for his lips, but it was dark, and whether she got there was kind of up in the air. "Cool. I, um, would too. For you."

Sam managed to shift enough that the kiss mostly landed on his lips, and he shifted just a little more to kiss her back. "I think I need a moment to imagine you growly. Because that's a pretty mental image."

Dawn shifted on top of Sam so she was more comfortable, too. And then there was the kissing, which just wiped her brain clean. "Huh?"

Having a lapful of Dawn wasn't doing much for Sam's concentration either. "You being growly would be pretty. I've never had a girl get like that on my behalf before."
