Second Floor Common Room, Early Saturday Morning

Sam hadn't gone back to her room after leaving Parker's party. She'd taken a very long run around the island, and then swam some laps in the pool in an attempt to exhaust herself into sleep, but it didn't work. She couldn't focus enough to work on her swoop bike or the wormhole equations on her wall, and she didn't have any homework to do.

Which was how she'd ended up in the common room making many pots of coffee and setting out an assortment of pastries from J, GoB (along with a little sign that said No, I didn't make them! and a reference phone number for the bakery in case anyone wanted to call and check). She wasn't exactly feeling social, but that could always change. She started nibbling on a bear claw and flipped through channels on the television.

"Maybe not." Sam got up to pour herself a fourth cup of coffee and ended up having to make another pot. "So, Tannim, tell me about yourself?"

"I'm from Oklahoma, present day," Tannim said. "Not so exciting as some. How about you?"

"Colorado Springs, same," Sam said, pulling her knee up under her chin, "and I'm a science and tech geek."

"Cool," Tannim said. "I like tech stuff, too. I'm better with cars and engines, but I mess around with computer stuff sometimes."

"Ooh, what kind of cars and engines?" Sam asked. "I rebuilt a Volvo and converted a motorcycle frame into a swoop bike, which flies," she explained.

Tannim blinked. "Now rebuilding a 1969 Mustang doesn't sound as impressive as I'd hoped."

"You're rebuilding a '69 Mustang?" Sam asked, "Did you bring it with you? And it's extremely impressive."

"Thanks!" Tannim smiled. "It's back home. I don't have my license yet, so I couldn't drive it out here."

"Still, that's a great car. What got you started rebuilding it?"

"I love cars," Tannim said. "My neighbor had this old Mustang in his barn for ages. It wasn't running, but it was still a '69 Mustang. Took me a while, but I finally saved up enough money to buy it and managed to talk him into selling it to me. He said he had too many good memories of that car for it to be sold for parts, but I convinced him I really was going to restore it."

"How long have you been working on it?"

"About a year and a half now," Tannim said.

"Well, I hope I get the chance to see it," Sam said, "It's always great to get ideas from how other people do things."

Tannim nodded. "I'd love to see your swoop bike," he said. "It really flies?"

Sam grinned. "It's in the garage, along with Cameron's, Molly's, and Alec's, so you've got a lot to look at, since they were all made differently. They all fly--we raced them last semester."

Tannim's eyes widened. "Any chance you'd help me build one?"

"Sure," Sam said. "I've got the plans I got from A...a friend, and they should still work. We may have to make some of the parts, though, since I got a lot of them off planet, and I don't think we can get back."

"Sounds like fun," Tannim grinned.

"Cool. I'm going to check to see if the class schedules are up," Sam said, standing, "but I'm usually in the garage or 231, if you're looking for me."
