Dawn decided the time was right to attempt to make french toast. What could be better on Easter Sunday than brunch, right? So she'd handwavily bought some good bread, eggs, sugar, and vanilla, and was currently trying to figure out the right proportions of things. The griddle wasn't heating yet.

Being Dawn, in addition to syrup, she'd also bought strawberry jam, nutella, tobasco sauce, chocolate chips, walnuts, bananas, raspberry sauce, caramel, and peanut butter. There were also bacon and ham available if someone wanted to make them, and plenty of extra eggs and bread in case someone didn't want to go the french toast route.

She sipped at her pineapple juice and contemplated going to look up a recipe.

"Normal. Y'know, the apple pie, picket fence, non demon hunting life. And he's going to lie because normal people don't have families that do hunt demons." Dean wasn't quite able to keep his continued bitterness at this plan of Sammy's out of his voice though he did try to.

"Wow." Part of Dawn knew the odds were against her staying with Sam forever, but she hadn't expected to hear it quite so soon. Ow. And apparently he wasn't even planning on being friends after they split up. "So...I guess I'm not normal either. That's...wow."

Which, to be fair, she knew. She just hadn't expected it to bother Sam.

"What?" Dean said, realising what he'd just implied. "No, no, no, no," he said quickly. "I didn't mean- Sammy didn't mean... This isn't about you at all. This is about his problems being a Winchester. And I think he's been thinking about it and planning since before we even came here. He probably just hasn't updated the plans yet for the new reality. Or he just assumes you'll want normal as much as he does. But he cares for you Dawn, really. I promise you that."

Dawn knew Sam loved her, but finding out he wouldn't deal with what she thought she wanted her life to be wasn't a lot of fun as far as realizations went.

"I couldn't have normal even if I wanted it, which I don't," she sighed, "And Sam might want to try normal for a little while, but I bet he can't stick with it--normal's boring. What's the harm in him going to college, and learning something, and finding out what it's like to not, y'know, do the demon thing? And again with the boring."

Dean sighed. "I hope you're right. Not that I don't want Sammy to be happy and all. I just want him to be happier with us than without us."

"Forcing him to stay when he doesn't want to won't make anybody happy," Dawn reminded him, "not even you. I know you love him and want him to be with you, but...maybe you have to let him be who he thinks he wants to be, away from you, just for a little while, until he realizes who he really is?"

"Yeah I know," Dean said with another sigh. "Doesn't mean I have to like it though."

"I don't like it either," Dawn decided, shoving a plate of French toast in his direction, "so, we'll suck it up and be mopey at each other until he gets a clue."

She considered. "Think the frying pan could double as a clue bat?"

Dean grinned at that as he took the plate and reached for the syrup. "Might be worth a try to see."

"I can't believe you just agreed that I could hit Sam with cast iron," Dawn got up and peeked around the back of Dean's neck, just to make sure Alec hadn't borrowed his clothes and mannerisms for the day.
