Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Afternoon

At some point, Wyatt grew bored with the blocks and orbed out of Chris's room into the common room. The TV had some cartoons on, but Wyatt changed the channel. Anyone observing might note he wasn't using the remote to do it.

He found a channel with a movie about dragons on it and clapped in delight. He liked dragons. He wanted a dragon. So he started to call it out of the TV.

But as luck would have it, he took a step backwards and stepped on the actual remote control, changing the channel to a popular children's show. And what he called out of the TV wasn't exactly a dragon.

It was a singing purple dinosaur. "I love you, you love me, we're a happy family. With a great big hug and a kiss from me to you, won't you say you love me too?"

[Open, of course. Based on canon, but Barney wasn't entirely my idea. *bats eyes innocently* ;) ]

"It's a true story," Evie insisted. "So it's app-apprro-- that. Please? It has Isis! And meanie mean Set!"

"Okay," Anders said dubiously, "but I'm so not responsible if your parents yell at me for it later."

He turned to the beginning of the story (http://guardians.net/egypt//kids/myth_of_osiris_and_isis.htm) in the book and began to read.

"Set was very jealous of Osiris because he was more important than him. He decided to make an evil plan to kill him. He threw a party. At the party, there was a beautiful chest there. Set promised that whoever fit into the chest perfectly would get to keep it. Nobody knew that he had secretly made it the perfect size for Osiris. Everyone tried it but would not fit. When Osiris tried it, Set slammed it closed and nailed it shut. He threw it into the Nile to be swept away. Isis was heartbroken and immediately set off to find him."

"Awwwwwww." Evie looked up at him. "He was dumb, hunh?"

"Really dumb, apparently," Anders agreed, and continued:

"Meanwhile, the casket had been swept onto shore. A tree had grown up around it, enclosing it in its trunk. Then the tree had been cut down and was used as a pillar for the palace of King Byblos. Isis found this out and came there in disguise. Byblos saw her and begged her to take care of his child. Isis grew quite fond of the child and decided to make him immortal. So every night she would throw him onto magical fires to burn away all that was mortal about him. Then Isis would turn herself into a swallow and fly around the pillar weeping for her spouse. Unexpectedly one day Byblos came home and saw his child in the fires and blew them out."

"It was magic. And he messed it up." Evie shook her head sadly. "Silly Byblos. Would you wants to get burned up?" She peered up at him. "Up and up?"

"Considering there's only one of me, I'm kind of thinking not," Anders told her.

"Isis became angry and told him that now his son could never become immortal. He apologized and asked what he could do to make it up to her. Isis asked for the pillar and he let her have it. She removed the casket and wept upon it. Then she brought it home and when no one was looking, she opened it up. She turned into a bird called a kite and flapped her mighty wings. The wind her beating wings created gave him the Breath of Life for one day. During this time, she conceived her son Horus from him. Then she concealed the casket among long reeds. She went away to secretly give birth to her son."

He blinked. "Okay, that's kind of weird."

"That's how babies get made," Evie whispered to him, nodding knowledgably. "A mommy and a daddy sleep in the same bed and then there's a baby." She blinked. "Mostly they're alive."

Anders stared at her. "You're very smart for your age, Evie," he managed, then continued with the story.

"Unfortunately, one night Set was hunting and he saw the familiar chest. He was furious and tore up the body into fourteen pieces. Then he scattered the pieces all over Egypt so no one could restore them."

". . .okay, ew."

"Sometimes you find a dead body and there's only bits," Evie told him. "Like a leg. And then you gots to go look for the rest of it." She blinked at him. "Unless the hyenas got it."

Anders couldn't possibly be any more wide-eyed. "I think that's enough storytime for you."

"Noooo! Please? Please? I'll be quiet and not in-ta-rupt, I promise!" Evie closed her eyes tight and clasped her hands together. "Promise! Tell the ending, please?"

"Okay, okay," Anders said dubiously, hoping like hell he wouldn't face a lawsuit for inflicting trauma on a small child later on.

"Isis was inconsolable. She immediately began searching for the pieces in hopes of putting them back together. Nephthys also helped her. Nephthys felt sorry for her and infuriated with Set for doing such an awful thing. Anubis, Nephthys's son, also helped. He was like a jackal and was good at finding things. Eventually, they found all the parts but one, which they made a model of. They put all the parts together and Osiris looked as he had before.

Isis then performed rituals and, with the help of Anubis, she brought him back to life. Osiris was sent to rule the underworld, being the only person to live after death. He ruled it as he had once ruled the Earth. The sun, Ra, would wake him up every night after everyone had gone asleep. "

"And they lived happily forever and ever and ever, and that's why it's fun to stay up late!" Evie said, clapping her hands gleefully. "'Cause Osiris is up!" She bounced on the couch, then spontaneously hugged Anders. "Thank you Mister Anders, you read it really really good!"

"You're very welcome, Evie," Anders told her with a grin. "I'm glad you liked the story."

He was kind of creeped out, too, but hey.

"I'm going to go play with Sokka an' Door now," Evie told him. "I'll give you cookies later! Bye!"

And she wandered off to go play with her friends, determined to give Anders cookies in thanks later. If there were any left.
