Second floor common room: Tuesday afternoon

Jack had made a handwavy trip into town for supplies this morning, which he'd laid out on the kitchen counter. Everything one might need to make Devil's Food Cake. And everything one might need to make another, in case the first one went horribly wrong.

Sam was going to successfully cook something today if it killed him.

Why cake? It seemed appropriate given it was Sam's birthday, and there were two small packages sitting on the counter next to one of the bowls, wrapped in shiny silver paper.

Now all he needed was a Sam.

Sam? Totally poked her head into the room. "You're sure I can't change your mind?" She asked. "Maybe wear protective gear? Silcone gloves, maybe?"

"You're going to be fine," he promised, walking over and holding out his hand. "Come on, you said you trusted me. I'll get you through this."

"Okaaaay," she said, taking his hand and walking warily into the room. For lack of anything safer to wear, she'd chosen combat boots and a pair of slightly oversized BDUs.

"No body armour?" he teased, taking in what she was wearing. "I promise it's not going to be that scary." He held tight to her hand, so she wouldn't bolt, and leaned down to kiss her.

Sam was good with the kissing, and pulled him down to her in the hopes that he'd forget the primary purpose for being in the common room.

That wasn't going to happen, but Jack wasn't going to complain about the kissing, and he slipped his arms around her waist to pull her closer.

River had been for a walk into town, and was on her way back to her room, when she noticed cooking going on in the second floor common room. Yes, she did hope to get offered something to eat.

Jack was currently melting chocolate and brewing coffee, doing prep work before Sam arrived and the actual cake creating could start, and he looked up as River came in. "River, hey. Want coffee?" he offered, his happiness at seeing her just adding to the carefully subdued glee he was feeling. "Or there's cookies. Or both."

"Both?" River looked like she appreciated the offer. She reached up to give him a quick kiss, then frowned, tilting her head. "Sam's birthday? Didn't know." Her mind started working on what she could come up with in the way of presents.

"Both it is," he said, kissing her back. "And yup, Sam's birthday." He poured her a cup of coffee, pulled out the packet of cookies from J, GoB, and offered it to her.

River picked two cookies, then jumped up to sit on the worktop next to him. "Should find a present. And give her back her books." With the cookies in one hand she lifted the coffee cup in the other, sipping the coffee.

Jack slipped one arm around her waist, leaning against her while he kept an eye on the melting chocolate. He had his presents for Sam, but he was carefully not thinking about them; it was important that Sam be the first person to see them. "You have her books? Which ones?"

"Hey Jack," Cassie said, wandering in. "I see the aliens didn't get ya."

"They covered me in goo in places I probably shouldn't mention," he grinned and waved a hand in the air, "which is probably my fault for not wearing anything under my grad robes, but other that that? I'm in one piece. How's it going with you?"

And one of these (http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/travelpower/9190/) in his arms. Badly wrapped.

"Thank you!" She leaned forward to get the packages, her new pendant swinging forward, then she started working carefully on the wrapping paper.
