Second floor common room: Tuesday afternoon

Jack had made a handwavy trip into town for supplies this morning, which he'd laid out on the kitchen counter. Everything one might need to make Devil's Food Cake. And everything one might need to make another, in case the first one went horribly wrong.

Sam was going to successfully cook something today if it killed him.

Why cake? It seemed appropriate given it was Sam's birthday, and there were two small packages sitting on the counter next to one of the bowls, wrapped in shiny silver paper.

Now all he needed was a Sam.

[ooc: open of course, just with very minor OCD. First thread locked to Sam, thanks. Now with cake!! Come and celebrate Sam's birthday and the survival of the common room!]

"That was a gravity thing," Sam argued, "and an inertia thing. Not my fault."

She poured the dry ingredients into the sifter, medium-slowly, so there was some flour spatter.

"Hmmmm," she tried sifting, "adorable, huh?"

Sam turned to kiss him, but didn't stop sifting, getting dry ingredients all over the counter. "Whoops."

"No distracting me," she ordered, then finished sifting things into the bowl, "and now what?"

"The cake has chocolate and coffee in it?" Sam asked, feeling better about this. Maybe it wouldn't turn out that bad. "Can you add the vanilla? I think that's where I went wrong with the cookies."

She turned the mixer on low, then started adding little bits of the dry stuff.

Sam resisted the urge to poke the batter, mostly because it was rotating on the stand mixer. "You shouldn't have said that. I think you just jinxed the entire project."

"Always," she grinned.

"You promise?" Sam looked very, very hopefully at Jack.

And now she was torn. Jack and forty minutes and the danger of burnt cake, or perfect cake.

"That's very convenient."

"This I can probably do," she decided, giving the contents of the bowl a stir, then pouring half into one pan, then the rest into the other, getting only a little bit on the counter.

"Of course," Sam licked the chocolate off of Jack's finger, very thoroughly. "Mmmm. Very chocolatey."

Sam opened the oven and slid the pans inside, "What about you?" She asked, pulling him towards her after she closed the oven with her foot, "I wouldn't want you not to have fun."

Sam followed him, wondering how bad it would be if they accidentally burned down the common room.
