Chupacabra campfire: early Monday morning

Today was the first day of classes. Karal was quite pleased, because having nothing he needed to do felt rather odd.

Not, however, as odd as waking up to see the Valdemaran history he'd been reading nesting next to the bed. And clucking. And apparently quite determined to set on the balled up piece of paper it had found on the floor.

His inability to quite believe what he was seeing - and hearing - didn't seem to bother it.

Karal went into the common area to fetch a cup of tea and returned to find the book chicken had somehow incorporated his pillowcase into its nest. Which made it easy to scoop it up and carry it outside.

Settling it safely against a rock, he - after some fumbling - kindled a fire and sat down to watch it. "How in Vkandis' name are you making those noises? You're a book!"

The one problem with randomly signing up for workshops? It sucks when three of them are on the same day. Isabel got up early and went in search of caffiene, then took a walk around the campground.

"Now that's a perfect example of Fandom weirdness," she laughed, eyeing the book.

Karal smiled shyly at her. "This is something that happens often?" he asked.

Isabel nodded, "Often enough. Give it twenty fours and you should be able to put it back on the bookshelf. I'm Isabel," she said, taking a seat on a log. "Welcome to Fandom."

"Karal," he offered. "Thank you, and I'm relieved. I hadn't yet finished with it, and it's not in fact mine. I'm not sure how I'd explain this."

"But that's part of the fun," she laughed. "Explaining the weirdness to people that aren't here to experience it themselves. I really should got get my camera and take some pictures of this for my mom."

"I hadn't realised," he said, turning to watch the book chicken. "You're welcome to take it with you, if you'd like. It's currently attempting to hatch a piece of paper, but I'm sure it would be happy to do so elsewhere."

"Oh no, that's okay," Isabel laughed. "More then likely I'll go back to my cabin and find my copy of The Jade Flower scratching around on the floor."

Karal nodded. "It may prove to be an interesting day to begin our studies, if the books believe they are chickens."

"Interesting is a word you're going to use a lot around here," she nodded. "Do you have workshops today?"

"I have two, neither of which I know why I'm taking," he said, watching the book settle it's pages over it's 'egg'. "Dealing With Stupid People and Freelance Treasure Hunting."

"Then I'll be seeing a lot of you," Isabel smiled. "I have those as well. Stupid People should be fun. Professor Lyman is one of my favorite teachers ever. He's elevated sarcasm to a high art. Treasure hunting? Well I think I can safely say that it won't be boring."

"A familiar face will be a nice thing to have," he said, smiling up at her, then looking away. "And I'm sure they'll be of value, or I can't imagine they would have been selected for me. I wouldn't object if they were fun, as well."

"Except for Stupid People, I selected my other workshops by drawing names from a hat," she admitted.

""Hello," Gavin said with a nod. "I don't have a clucking book yet."

"No but give it enough time and your socks might wind up getting very affectionate," Isabel said mostly serious. "Or any small toys around the place could come to life. It's happened before."

He scratched his head and said, "Yeah, I'm beginning to realize that. Any reason why it happens?"

"Because this place is a nexus of weird," she shrugged. "I have a theory it happens to keep us distracted enough so that we don't all band together and start plotting world domination. Well either that or to give us something interesting to write home about."

"Oh." He frowned. "There's an interest in world domination here?"

"Honestly? No," Isabel promised. "Most everyone here wants to use their powers for good. So they're more focused on stopping plans for world domination. Or on getting a date. It depends on how close it is to the weekend."

"A date?" He squeaked a little and made a face.

More shrugging. "Nobody said our priorities were in the right order."

And no one knew how bad he was at that, Asyr notwithstanding. He'd gotten lucky.

"Finding a date is a tradition?"

"Tradition, social custom, right of passage, means of humiliating yourself," Isabel chuckled. "It's all that and more. It's also not required if it's not your thing. God knows there's plenty of stuff to do around here regardless."

He breathed a quiet sigh of relief. "This place is confusing."

"I use the term insane a lot," she said, taking a sip of her coffee. "But compared to Roswell or Antar? This is the place I feel most at home. Where's home for you?"
