Outside Chupacabra cabin: Tuesday afternoon

With no classes on Tuesday, there was nothing that he had to do. Karal was fairly certain he was never going to get used to that but, after much urging from Altra, he was making the attempt.

It was a beautiful day and he was currently sitting against a tree behind Chupacabra cabin, in riding clothes rather than his robes, holding Trenor on a long line so he could graze at the edge of the clearing.

There was a bright beam of sunlight shining on him, making him sleepy and warm, Trenor occasionally whickered happily, and he was rereading the Tale of Gregori.

Maybe having nothing to do wasn't quite so bad.

"I don't think you have to understand it all, honest. I mean, I've never been on a spaceship. Or an asteroid. We just all stay on this planet, mostly." Charlie looked worried. "Are you okay? Maybe we should take you to a planetarium, or something. I'm sure they could explain it better."

"I'm not certain I want to understand it better," he said, then shook his head. "No, no that's not right. I do want to understand. I was sent here for a reason, after all." He took a deep breath. "I am fine, truly." He smiled. "Just overwhelmed. What's a planetarium?"

Charlie looked worried, but nodded. "It's a big building where you can look at the stars, or a light show about the stars, and they explain about the planets and the comets and things. Sometimes they have music and it's really cool," she said with enthusiasm, then looked a little embarassed. "We had a couple field trips to them in school, when I was younger. *I* always liked them."

"Truly, I am fine. Please don't be concerned," he said softly, reacting to her expression. "And that sounds like an amazing thing to see." Comets were another new thing, but he decided he would ask someone else about them.

"Okay, if you're sure. Your world doesn't have technology like ours, does it? I mean, it sounds like your science either isn't as advanced or just isn't like ours," Charlie asked, tilting her head.

"We have magic and horses. Water powered mills," he explained. "No holos or light switches, telephones or cameras. So I think it may be both."

"Whoa. Yeah, that's ... pretty different," Charlie said, thinking as she took a step back from Trenor with one last pat. "There's a lot of museums in D.C., over the Causeway? That explain history and technology and science and stuff. Maybe you can visit them some weekend."

Museums he knew about. "That would be wonderful," he said, even though the thought of leaving the island was kind of frightening. "Perhaps not for awhile yet, though." He smiled. "I'm barely familiar with the island, going elsewhere might be unwise."

"It only our fifth day here," Charlie agreed. "We've got the whole summer for that kinda thing. Plus, other fun stuff, like the beach!"

"Glory, yes! I'd never seen the ocean before!" He beamed at her, happy to let new and strange concepts fall by the wayside. "It is incredibly beautiful, like nothing I've ever seen before."

"Isn't it great?" And isn't it wonderful to be living so close to a huge source of water, Charlie thought. "We lived near ponds and lakes, but nothing like this. I love it. I don't have a workshop tomorrow, so I think I'm just going to walk on the beach for half the day."

"It is, it's amazing. I've never seen so much water in one place. I took Trenor for a ride on the beach, and even he seemed to appreciate it." Karal patted Trenor once more then let him return to grazing. "I suspect I'll find myself there fairly often."

Charlie smiled, and said, "Then I'll probably run into you there. If not at the stables, spoiling your horse."

"He is going to become fat, lazy, and spoiled." Karal didn't look upset, more amused. "Runs on the beach may become a necessity, so yes, it's more than likely we'll see each other there."

"Cool. And if it gets real amusing, feel free to ask me questions. I may not explain things real well, but I'll try." Charlie waved to Trenor. "Bye, Trenor. See you around, Karal."
