Chupacabra Campfire [Tuesday Evening]

One workshop on explosions, one more day spent avoiding Luke and Gavin's back at the campfire. He's not hiding this time, but he's still prepared to run should anyone mention quarters or tigers or 'angels.'

After his workshop, he'd gone into town and picked up ten bars of chocolate. Yes, ten. Look, they might taste different, okay? Of course, Gavin's not thinking of chocolate plus fire equals a mess. He's too busy trying to decide which to try first.

"Hastings Glen, New York. Little town you've never heard of," Charlie said, not sure if she should push about Professor Deadpool, and deciding to drop it in favor of the other topic. "Mostly because people only one hour away have never heard of it." She smiled. "I'd like to visit Japan, someday-- have you been here at this school long?"

"I started here last summer," Setsuna said with a nod, thinking about how much simpler things seemed back then...She gave a little emo sigh. "You've just started yourself, correct?"

"Uh-hunh. I'm really liking it so far. The people seem really cool, and, you know. Different." She grinned at Setsuna. "I like it."

"Good." Setsuna nodded. "The place you're from sounds like it might be a little on the normal side of things, and so I know that's jarring for some people. I lucked out. My old school was a lot like Fandom, just bigger and a little...less obvious about it's quirks."

"Really? There's more than one school like this?" Charlie shook her head, thinking about it. "I was wondering how they got away with this, but now that enough people have explained, I kind of get that Fandom protects itself... and most people wouldn't believe it anyway." She smiled. "And yeah, so far, it's all been good, even with people telling me about invasions and monsters."

Setsuna chuckled lightly. "Mahora was very much the same. Plus, they had a very strong underground network to help keep things nicely underwraps."

"That.... explains even more," Charlie said slowly. Although it wasn't all that reassuring. "Do you think there's something like it here?"

"Secret network?" Setsuna shook her head. "I'm sure the adminstration maintains a certain field of protection, but, really, with the student body we have here, a secret network is hardly necissary. If there's one thing to say about the students of Fandom, it's that they can hold their own, that's for sure."

"Hunh. Really?" Charlie leaned forward, wrapping her arms around herself. "You mean like Johnny and Liz being able to do things with fire, and some of the others being ninjas and all?"

Huh, imagine that, Charlie listing two things Setsuna classified as.

...Yes, that little flame thing totally counted. It managed to bring a whole building to ash, thank you very much.

But Charlie's reaction sort of had Setsuna shifting her direction. "Well, yes, but it makes sense for them to do things like that. But there are a lot of normal students here, too, that have done phenomenal things. My really good friend Jude is about as normal as they come...but I've never seen him fail to rise to a challenge that Fandom has thrown at him. He's not terribly alone in that, either."

"Like Dean," Charlie said, thinking aloud. "His family fights ghosts and demons, but he doesn't have any powers at all." There might be a tiny bit of hero-worship there. "So lots of the other students are like that... hunh." She gave Setsuna a bright smile. "That's even cooler."

And Setsuna really couldn't help but return the grin. She had a pretty crappy day, sure, but she seemed to at least make someone feel a little better about themselves. "I'd have to agree with you there."

So she could help, without risking hurting people, if it turned out they needed it. Important to keep that in mind. "So how do you say, 'It's nice to meet you' in Japanese?"

"//It's nice to ... meet... you,//" Charlie said ultra-slowly, with a heavy accent, but at least getting all the syllables in. "How long did it take you to learn English?"

Setsuna smiled, nodding. "Hai! Very good!" A light chuckle even slipped out. "I'm still not too good with English, I have to admit. I can speak it well enough, but writing it is terrible. I picked it up very quickly once I came here, and, before, in Japan, I had an excellent sensei who taught us English. He himself was English, so I think that had a lot to do with my success, having a native speaker teaching it."

"I would guess so. Hai. I watch Supers, and I can't follow anything the teleporting guy says," Charlie admitted. "But TV probably isn't the best way, hunh?"

Setsuna grinned slightly. "Not unless you want to join the ranks of otaku like my mun who feel they can learn Japanese by what they see in anime..."
