First Floor Lobby, evening

After visiting the big picnic, and picking out most of the new people by sight, Evie retired back to the dorms and settled into the lobby couch to people-watch. With a book. Or possibly, five.

"Oh please, feel free to look. I think I have Death Warriors of Mars in there, my friend Jake recommended that," Evie said, nodding to Bart. "As well as History of the Roman Empire, Desire in the Desert, La Coeur en Hiver, and..." She picked up the last one, and frowned. "Murder in Manhattan. Quite good, really, and I didn't figure out who did it until the last five pages."

Bart reached over for Desire in the Desert, flipping through a few pages for a moment to get used to the words. This would have been easier if someone had remembered to teach him to read English. "Are they good?" He asked, picking up the words painfully slow.

"Yes! That one's especially adventurous and swash-buckling, and the hero is very brave," Evie said, cocking her head. "What do you usually like to read?"

What did he like to read? Bart paused, book half finished. It was pretty cool so far. Needed more ninjas. "I dunno. Anything?"

"We've got *quite* a good library, which fortunately was only slightly damaged during the recent unpleasantness during Graduation," Evie said, possibly indulging in huge euphemism for Big Alien Invasion there. "Although they don't let you go into Special Collections without a note from a teacher, sadly. Oh! And there's a good bookstore in town, too. They're splendid about ordering books if you need them."

"A library?" That might be fun for an afternoon... "What happened to it? Was it the weird things with the music?"

"No," Evie said, then coughed a little. "Ahem. It was, ahhh, another set of visitors from elsewhere. Rude things, with huge heads, and, um. Ray guns." She sounded positively apologetic. "The graduating class took care of them, but not before they destroyed things."

"Oh. Do you guys have that happen a lot?" Because that would be cool. So very cool. He might actually have to thank Wally for sending him here if that was a common occurrence.

Encouraged by Bart's reaction, Evie frowned, thinking. "Every few months, or so, something seems to happen... Let's see. There was the flooding, with the mer-people. They threw fish at people, and there was a giant squid." She started counting on her fingers. "The trolls who were kidnapping people back in December-- horrid things. Such trollops." Evie sniffed. "That alien invasion, the little one last week... oh, there was that horrid thing with the shadows that stole your solidity, that was February... Yes, I'd say every few months. But then, I've only been here since last September. I understand it used to be even worse."

"Worse?" That sounded AWESOME. Why couldn't he have gone back just a few years further?

"Vampires. And evil mummies," Evie said, nodding. "Of course, there's still zombies on the Island, but they mostly play karaoke music at Caritas. And there's a non-violence spell there, so they can't eat anyone's brains." She frowned. "I'm not even sure they'd want to at this point."
