Second floor common room, Saturday afternoon

Qui-Gon had recently discovered television and while it seemed primitive in some ways compared to the holos that were the closest equivalent, he was finding the range and content of the programming rather fascinating.

He was particularly enamoured with those programs showing disputes being arbitrated. The cases seemed to be mostly about petty little things and not the life or death issues the Jedi were often called upon to help settle, but it was interesting to watch the different ways the judges sorted out the truth of the situation.

And besides, Judge Judy looked a lot like one of the Jedi Council members, which added a whole other level of amusement to Qui-Gon's viewing.

Flipping through the channels today however was not yielding the programs in their usual places and he settled instead on some kind of large musical concert that seemed to be commemorating the planet.

[open like a common room]

"There is usually a latrine tank that is emptied at port or in emergency cases in space," River explained, finding the question a little surprising. "You are interested in spaceships?"

"Oh my, yes. I mean, does your spaceship travel faster than light? It would have to, right? Is it 'wrap drive'? Or something totally different?" Andrew paused, "What's it called, your spaceship?"

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
"Not faster than light," River replied. "And it's called Serenity. Midbulk transport, standard radion-accelerator core, classcode 03-K64, "Firefly". I have a ship here too, the Acorn, but it's currently out of gas and not quite as advanced. Built by squirrels."

"Serenity." Andrew nodded. "That's a really wonderful name for a spaceship. I feel calmer just saying it. Serenity."

And then, "Squirrels? Like advanced alien tree rodents?"

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-07-07 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Named after the battle of Serenity Valley," River continued. "And Fandom squirrels."

"Get outta' town!" Andrew exclaimed. "Like the squirrels that follow you around town? I mean, I thought they were a little freaky, but they built you a spaceship?" Andrew's eyes went wide, "Do you just have to ask them for one?"

"I became another person for a weekend who seem to exert some influence over them. It's not a regular occurrence," River clarified. "So where are you from, Andrew?"

[And bedtime for me!]

Nodding, like it made sense, "I see. I can buy that. If I were a squirrel, I would totally build you a spaceship. You're a peach."

Still nodding, "I'm from California. Sunnydale. Good chance you know someone else from there - everyone does, apparently."

[Night!!!]

"Buffy, my roommate, just left to go there," River said. "Good place?"

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 12:56 pm (UTC)(link)
"Buffy Summers is your roommate? Wow-o. I know Buffy! Well, I know who she is. She probably has no clue who I am. Is she nice? She was popular at Sunnydale High. I don't really hang out with popular kids." Andrew got quiet for a moment.

"Sunnydale is okay. Once you get past the vampire and demons and crazy Halloweens, it's a pretty nice little town."

[identity profile] moonbrain-tam.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
River grinned. "Vampires. I've killed one. And Buffy is a good friend." One she trusted a lot.

[identity profile] wannabe-pan.livejournal.com 2007-07-08 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
"You killed a vampire?" He pronounced it 'vam-pier' with a slight French lilt. "Was is an epic and heroic struggle for you life?" Andrew was very excited.

"No. I just put a stake through its heart and it turned to dust. Practical. No mess." Then she smiled again. "I've also met a reasonably friendly vampire who only drank animal blood. I made him blood pancakes, but I don't think he approved."

Yes, River may have found it flattering that everything she'd done seemed to impress Andrew.
