The front lawns, outside the dorms: Monday afternoon

Jack had gone for a run. A very long run, down to the beach and back, though about half way through he'd decided he was insane, because it was too damn hot, which was bad timing, because he still had to run back.

Luckily there was a hose he could soak his head with and a nice bit of lawn to stretch out on. Which was what he was doing right now, wearing nothing but a pair of very short shorts, lying on his back while he worked on his tan.

Lana was on her way back to the dorms after her last class when she saw Johnny. She hesitated, half-considering whether she should slip away before he saw her, but decided that wasn't nice when he was working so hard to be good to her. She started over to him, then stopped dead when she spotted someone she'd never thought she'd see again.

Yes, poor Lana. Someday she really ought to start listening to the radio regularly. "Jack?!"

Jack glanced over at her and grinned. "Hey, Lana."

She shook her head, still feeling completely stunned. "You're here - back. You... how did you get here? I mean, it is, you isn't it? Not just someone who looks like you?"

"I am back, it is me, I got here in a ship, and I'm pretty sure there's no one in the world who looks like me." Apart from the Captain, and he didn't count. "How have you been?"

She grinned at him. "That's the Jack I know. I've been good." She made a little face. "Jim's dad pulled him out for a week, so I'm a bit at loose ends this week. I'm hoping between classes and work I can keep myself busy."

"Shouldn't be too much trouble to do that here," he said, sitting up a little bit, leaning back on his hands. "And it's not like he's gone forever."

"Nope. Just a week." She smiled at Jack. "It's easier to let him go because he always comes back. That's a first in my life."

"Yeah, I bet it's easy to get used to." Jack smiled again. "Apart from missing your boyfriend, anything interesting been happening around the place?"

"The usual fandom weirdness," Lana replied. "Attacked by psychos in the woods, people turning into animals, all that good stuff."

"The psycho in the woods is new, but I always figured it was only a matter of time." Jack grinnned. "You look good for someone who was attacked in the woods. You going to sit down and keep me company?"

Lana laughed and sat down next to him. "So how did you get to come back? What have you been up to? I've missed you!"

"Had some time off, and this seemed a good a place as any," he said with a shrug. "And I am extremely missable."

"That you are," she said with a grin. "Well, whyever your back, I'm glad. Are you able to stay long?"

Unfortunately, Lana didn't slip away fast enough. Johnny caught up to her after she'd had her little visit with Jack.

"Hey, Lana, wait up!"

"Johnny," Lana said with a almost completely sincere smile. "There you are!"

He gave her a look, "We're you looking for me, sweetheart?"

"Yes," she said with complete truthfullness. Even if she didn't exactly mean it the way he meant it. But looking out for someone in an effort to possibly avoid... Well, that was still looking wasn't it? "So, how was your day?"

"It was good," he said with a cheeky grin. "How was yours? The rest of your day go all right at the book store?"

"The book store went fine and my classes went well, though I don't know how they stuck me in that Redemption class." She made a little face. "Oh well, it will be fine, I guess."

"Redemption? What kind of class is that?" He asked skeptically. He wouldn't have signed up for it either - just the name sounded all kinds of wrong.

"It's taught by Ares and it's supposed to be a class about how the idea of redemption is just a bunch of nonsense."

Lana sighed. "Oh well, what can you do?"

"Redemption being nonsense?" Now that was a little different. "I could totally do that. So, you're stuck there, hmm? And how have you been sleeping at night, by the way?"

"Well," she was definitely hedging a little on this one. "Not too badly? I've been staying up late reading." And getting up as soon as the first dreams hit, but no need to share that.

"We're camping out tonight, what do you say? Third floor common room, sleeping bags, popcorn, the sports channel, the whole nine yards. What do you say?"

"Well, other than the sports channel it all sounds pretty good. What about some action adventure movies instead?" she counter-offered.
