Third floor common room [evening]

It was slowly ticking towards curfew but it wasn't bothering Luke overly much. He'd discovered a marathon of old Galaxy Quest episodes and was entirely too caught up in laughing until he cried at the terrible dialogue and sound effects.

He'd made popcorn--without burning it!--and even though he'd then dumped a bag of M&Ms into it, he was up for sharing.

"Hey, Luke. What're you..." Dawn spotted the television and answered her own question. "Ooooh, good choice. And you made popcorn? My hero. Mind if I mooch?"

John followed his ears to the common room. He lounged on a chair and surveyed the TV screen. "Ah, Galaxy Quest. Nesmith was the best captain ever."

"Hey, Dawn," Luke said with a grin. "My popcorn is your popcorn. I added chocolate things to it, too, but they've mostly sunk to the bottom."

"There was more than one captain?" Luke asked, looking confused.

Poor, poor Luke.

"Excellent," she grabbed a handful, proud of Luke's spurt of culinary prowess, "and chocolate? That's very advanced of you. I'm impressed. Hey, how's your arm? She did a number of Sam, too, but he wouldn't let me kill her either."

By the look on Dawn's face, it was probably obvious that she considered this a glaring mistake.

"Well, yeah. But Nesmith is the only one worth remembering," John replied, not really helping.

"It was a lucky accident," Luke admitted. "I was actually reaching for something else."

Sunflower seeds. Eww.

"She hurt Sam, too? Recently?" Luke's eyebrows furrowed.

"...that doesn't really help me."

Jenny paused in the doorway of the common room when she saw what was on the screen. She remembered watching this stoned when it first came on, and then later, with the rest of the Authority, high on nothing but life (all of them except the Doctor, of course). "Ah, memories."

"Nesmith is the cool captain. He gets the girl and saves the day. The other guy mostly drank tea. Really weak breakfast tea," John attempted a better explanation.

"Memories?" Luke asked. "When were these on the first time? Did they know how terrible their special effects were? And doesn't that woman get cold?"

Luke wrinkled up his nose. "He seems to have a thing for many-breasted women in tiny skirts," he said.

Then he sighed.

"Aunt Beru said that's how nice boys get nasty diseases."

"I found out about his hand after class," she scowled. "I think she did something to his mind, too, but I don't know exactly what or how."

Luke leaned closer as he dropped his voice. "Do you think she's escalating?" he asked.

"Well, here on Earth we have things that help avoid the nasty diseases," John said, trying not to smile too widely.

"I don't know," Dawn whispered back, "I'm not sure how to tell. I haven't heard anything for the last few days."

"Oh, so did we," Luke said, blushing furiously, "but when you live on a farm and the biggest town around...isn't that big, buying such things gets you in trouble at home."

"Just my father's name over and over," Luke agreed, tone getting a little harsh. "I'm not sure I want to know what he's up to."

Sam peeked his head in the common room, and then came in when he saw it wasn't empty. "Hey," he said, waving.

Luke, after his conversation with Dawn, glanced down at Sam's hand just slow enough to be noticed. "Hi," he said with a small smile. "We have popcorn and stupid television."

"Okay, what's the deal with you and your dad? Because you were getting along until a couple of weeks ago, right? How much trouble could he get into?"

"He killed a T-Rex because it broke my arm," Luke said. "I don't know how to describe the trouble he could get into. He's infamous at home."

Interesting choice of wording...

"Nah, at the time that was cutting edge," Jenny said as she came further into the room and looked around for a seat. "And I'm told it's very warm under stage lights. She was probably the most comfortable person on set."

"But...did you tell him about what she did to you? Because I bet I would have heard if he'd killed her, right?" Dawn asked, feeling both a bit hopeful and like she'd just had this conversation with Sam, "and infamous? Like for his fighting?"

"The curse of the small town," John nodded knowingly. "I never did understand that. You'd think they'd all just be happy you were being safe and not making out with your sister."
