Fourth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Evening

In the kitchen area, there was a Jenny. And Jenny? Was wearing an apron. This was generally not a good thing. Luckily for other people, especially if they were looking for something to eat, she was not alone.

"Right," she said to Ronan. "Feed me, meta for Seymour."

((Open like a common room!))

Anders raised an eyebrow at her. "That sounds kinda freaky. What do they do?"

"They take protein molecules and re-assemble them. They were developed for the first deep space cargo ships since they could only take a limited amount of food, but they're also distributed to ordinary households as well," explained Hoshi.

"That . . ." Anders wrinkled his nose. "That doesn't sound really appetizing."

"It isn't at all," said Hoshi. "They're still fairly primitive. You can totally taste the difference and they can't make anything complicated yet. I suppose I'll have to get used to them one day if I want to join one of the deep space missions."

"Maybe they'll get better before then?" Anders offered hopefully. "I mean, it could be worse. You could be stuck eating nothing but noodles all the time."

"I hope so, or maybe it'll just taste better when you're hungry," said Hoshi. "Either way, I may have a sneak a hot plate aboard."

"That won't get you in trouble, will it?" asked Anders, grinning. "I know there used to be issues with weight allowances and stuff way back when the Colonials started space travel, but that was forever ago and it's totally not a problem on, like, one of the Battlestars."

"I don't know," said Hoshi. "I guess we'll have to see how badly they want me as a translator if they won't take my hot plate."

Anders got a mental image of Hoshi getting busted on the jetway at a spaceport terminal, then decided that was a little bit too absurd and laughed. "How many languages do you speak, Hoshi?"

"I haven't counted in a while," said Hoshi, thinking. "There's English and Japanese, of course. Then there's the basics like French, German, Italian, and Spanish. I can speak Russian, but need some practice writing it. Um, Latin and Greek, both ancient and modern. Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean and Tagalog. Hindi, Marathi, Urdu, Punjabi, and Gujrati. Dutch, Danish, Lithuanian... I'm missing something else in there. I also started learning Vulcan right before I left home."
