There was a Jeff watching movies in the common room.

This Jeff was watching very bad old horror movies.

This was a Jeff with a purpose. A Jeff with a plan.

This was a Jeff who was going to win a Film Off, yes.

Jim had been a whore to common rooms above his own recently, so he wandered up to the fifth floor and saw that there were movies. "Hey," he said, taking a seat. "What's on?"

"The Globule," Jeff informed him, "They're just about to rescue the puppy."

"You know, I don't think I've ever seen this one, but, hey, puppy. Have to watch it," Jim said. "You're Jeff, right?" Jim recognized him from Debate, but he didn't recall ever actually talking to him.

"The puppy is the good part," Jeff affirmed. And gave a nod at the name. "Well, it's all sort of the good part, it's just the puppy is sort of the reason I'm watching." He paused. "Not that I'm some sort of, you know, puppy fetishist, it's just I got into this argument and now it's all puppies."

Jim had reported about Jeff on the radio and he had heard Jeff on the radio but nothing quite compared to talking to Jeff in person. "What was the argument about?"

"Films." Jeff seemed quite serious about this topic. "That Weird Bloke Andrew seems to think Space Battles is better than," he made a complex set of gestures, "This!"

"Because this movie has a dog and Space Battles doesn't?" Jim asked, trying to keep up.

"Obviously, Princess Leanna's buns do add some level of appeal to Space Battles," Jeff explained, "But there's no puppy in a car. There should always be a puppy in a car in these movies, it's in the rules."

"What about a puppy in a spaceship?" Jim asked, figuring he more or less had a handle on the conversation at the moment. "Is that better than a puppy in a car?"

Ino slipped into the common room, in search of entertainment, and grinned when she saw her big brother watching movies, "Hi Jeff! What are you watching?"

"Hey," Jim said. "Have we met?"

[intraspective]

"Huh?" Ino looked at him, then shook her head, "I don't think so?" She grinned at him, "I'm Yamanaka Ino, though."

"I didn't think so. I'm pretty good with faces," Jim said. "Jim Halpert. It's nice to meet you."

"Likewise!" Ino said. "I can't believe how many people I haven't met yet - and I've been here since September."

"You know, I've been here since January and I'm still finding people I haven't met, too," Jim said. "But part of that is that we keep getting new people. And it always happens at the beginning of the semester. It's so weird."

[intraspective]

"Everything is weird around here." Ino laughed, "I've learned that really quick. But really? You mean every semester the number of people I don't know is just going to go up?" That was a big difference from home. "It's a lot different from home."

"Well, most of the people here are actually just robots," Jim said, joking but seeing if he could take terrible advantage of a newish person who could potentially be terribly gullible. "So every semester after they learn a certain amount, they get sent out to the people who ordered them and a new batch of robots replaces them. So, yeah, there's a constant turnover every few months."

Jim wasn't sure why he did this to people. Well, yes, he did. It was entertaining.

"... what's a robot?" Ino asked, frowning. Most of the people she'd met seemed pretty... people-like.

"Little sister!" Jeff grinned at her. "Sit down! I am watching the world's greatest horror movies." He gestured at the screen.

[intraspective]

"Ooooh, horror movies?" Ino came and sat down, "Those are always fun." She looked at him, "How have you been?"

"My mother's coming," he told her, "I'm preparing for the apocalypse."

"It's that bad? Does she know about Fandom at least?" Ino asked, "... and how are you preparing?"

"I've barricaded a part of the hotel near the kitchen," Jeff told her seriously. "Mary's got me on staff so I can't leave."

[intraspective]

She blinked. Um. "Um... so you'll solve your problems by trapping yourself in with your mom?" That seemed... sorta defeatist to Ino. "Wouldn't it be better to prepare quick escape routes?"

"No, no," Jeff gestured a lot, "I'm trapped in the hotel 'cos Mary's got me on staff. I'm barricading myself so she can't get near."

It was obviously the only sane solution.
