Seely had gotten up early for reasons that nothing to do with girlfriend-enforced temporary celibacy, and immediately gone down to the gym to work off the 'excess energy'.

He was in no way imagining any Princes of Archenland's faces on the heavy bag as he punched it.

"Perhaps it's because you were beating on him! He's much littler than you, Seely, but his stupidity nearly outshines yours sometimes," Aravis said, getting frustrated. "That wasn't sparring. That was a fight."

"He said that before I started hitting him!" Seely protested sulkily. "He said you'd do this too!"

"Do what? Be angry that my boyfriend and best friend were hurting one another?"

"...for what?" Aravis had calmed down somewhat, and was staring at him.

"I don't understand," she said, still confused.

Seely shifted uncomfortably from foot to foot. "He said I didn't like him and the only reason I wasn't hitting harder was that you'd pick him over me if I did."

Which wasn't quite what Cor had said, but insecurities and testosterone poisoning made for fun times.

"Pick him for what?"

Aravis was occasionally a little bit dense. Very occasionally.

"Him," Seely said. "His side. Not me."

Aravis stared at him.

"Pick him? Over you? Is this because you're jealous?"

"I am not jealous." Well, not just jealous.

"Why choose one when you're both being equally stupid?" She smiled a little. "Already picked you, idiot."

Seely relaxed slightly. "You did?"

"I refuse to take sides in this stupid quarrel you two evidently had this morning," she amended, "but in general, yes, idiot, I picked you. I love you. Even when you're acting brain-damaged."

Aravis rolled her eyes, dropping her voice. "I thought we were beyond this. There's no need to be insecure about Cor. He's only a friend. A dear, good friend, but that is all. My heart is yours and yours alone, and I do not take kindly to bruises of this nature being inflicted on my behalf. Idiot."

"I know," Seely said quietly. "And I know I shouldn't be, but part of me keeps being afraid I'll get traded in for a better model."
