After the two boys were handwavily gremlin bit earlier in Chris' room, Jack Johnny and Ennis Chris headed outdoors to get to work and do what need's doin' to gather the herd and keep 'em secure on Crackback Mountain.

It was just that Johnny was a bit confused and glancin' over at Chris told him that the ranch hand was pretty much in the same boat.

"Ah, hell, Chris, I don't be seein' them heffer's 'round, do you? And the good Lord strike me dead if this here be Crackback Mountain. I'll be a yankee sumbitch if these here hills be called mountains."

Hands on hips, he glared at the ground.

"You thinkin' real hard over there or are you just as confused as I am?"

Hoshi noticed a pretty significant difference from the way Johnny usually spoke. It annoyed her when she thought she had a regional accent down and the other person threw her a curveball like this. "This century is just way too confusing for me," she groaned.

"I reckon you go on back to the school room then, little lady. Nothin' confusin' 'bout where I'm standin'."

"You did not just call me little lady," said Hoshi, frowning. "And did you actually say reckon?"

"I didn't?" Johnny scratched his head then nodded. "Yeeeup, I'm pretty sure I just called you little lady." He blinked. "Reckon what?"

"This is fascinating," said Hoshi, ignoring his question because she was more interested in how he was saying it. "You're using a regional dialect from the American West, but not the West Coast. The word choice is particularly unique. I've never heard anything like this. Keep talking."

"I'd say you're confusin' the hell outta me, girl," he said, narrowing his eyes at her. "You one of them fancy, liberatin' female sorts?"

"There's nothing fancy about being liberated. Everyone's liberated where I come from. I really hope I have a data PADD with me because I need to record this," said Hoshi, rummaging through her bag until she found one.

"Oh, hell no," he said, eyeing her as she dug through her pouch. "You ain't tryin' nothin' on me!"

"Relax, it's just an ordinary personal access display device. Well, it would be ordinary if you were from the 22nd century," said Hoshi, waving a rectangular metallic object with a liquid crystal display.

"Personal access my ass! You ain't accessin' nothin' little woman. Just you pack up and head on down the mountain'."

"It's just a recording device, really!" protested Hoshi. To prove her point, she pressed something on the touchscreen and started talking. "Personal log, December 12, 2007. Today I came across another regional dialect from the North American continent that I've never heard before. It doesn't appear to be a modern variation either, although modern is a relative term from a quantum viewpoint. There, now it's your turn to talk," she said, holding out the PADD.

Johnny sighed and swung the rifle he was carrying over his shoulder, letting her see it plainly. Who knows where it came from. "I told ya lady, I don't want no business with no gadgets touchin' and proddin' me. Now how about you turn tail and head on down the mountain. You see a heffer, you just give a shout out, ya here?"

"I'm not about to start touching and prodding a guy that has a girlfriend, especially when he can set himself on fire," said Hoshi, pouting as she put the PADD away.

"You ain't referrin' to me now, are you? I've got a wife, kid... You live the summer up here, darlin' and you got to learn how to start a fire or two."

Johnny glanced wistfully over at Chris.

"Um, does your girlfriend Savannah know about your wife and kid?" asked Hoshi warily.

Johnny just thought he should go with it. "Savannah's in Georgia, ma'am."

"She is? When is coming back from Georgia?" asked Hoshi innocently.

Johnny chuckled, thinking this was some foreigner. "Well we can hope the state of Georgia keeps her a good long while."

Hoshi had no idea how to respond to that. She just stared at Johnny.

He smiled at her, tucking his thumbs into the loops of his britches, and rocking back on the heels of his cowboy boots.

"I should get back to studying," said Hoshi, still looking a bit confused. "So, um, good luck on your final exams. I guess I'll see you in class on Monday."
