Third Floor Common Room [evening]

Evey had found her room with little difficulty, and after tossing her bag towards one of the (thank heaven) two beds, she'd memorized where she'd be returning and wandered out to see what she might find.

And naturally, the there was the common room on her floor, with a television (granted, much older than she was accustomed to, but it would do.) And where there was a television, there was news, and ways to catch up with the fact that she was twenty years in the past.

As a result, Evey was curled up on the couch, quietly flipping through channels and trying to acquaint herself with a world that seemed somewhat different from her history lessons. Perhaps her memory was just a touch fuzzy.

Trying not to grin too much at that good old TV-fascination, A.J. waved to the other guy and introduced himself with a light, friendly sort of smile. "Hey, other new kid. I'm A.J. Nice to meet you."

"Seregil i Korit Solun Meringill Bokthersa," Seregil said, tearing his eyes from the box to look at the other boy. "Just call me Seregil."

A.J. blinked. That was...quite a name. Especially when talking to a boy whose name was two freaking letters.

"Uhhh, cool. Seregil it is, then. First time seeing a TV, I take it?"

"Is that what it's called?" Seregil asked, his gaze going back to it.

"Yup," A.J. nodded. "TV. Short for television."

Seregil repeated the word to himself. "These TVs are common here?"

A.J. nodded. "Yup. You'll find one in every common room on every floor, and a few people'll even got them in their rooms. Major source of entertainment in this time period."

Look at A.J. go. He felt so smart.

"Entertainment," Seregil echoed. "So... it's like the theatre? In a box?"

"Yeah!" A.J. beamed at the other guy's comparison. "Exactly! Well, a little different, because you can do a lot more with a TV show or a movie that you'd be hard pressed to do on a stage, but it's generally the same concept, yeah."

Seregil looked more closely at the tv. "I think I need to get to know more about this TV. It's been a while since I was able to go to the theatre."

A.J.'s head tilted. "You mean, more about how it works, or just watch more stuff on it? There's not much to it. Come into the room, turn it on; there should be a remote hidden around here somewhere. You use that to change the channel, to watch different stuff...." He shrugged, thinking that if Seregil really wanted to learn more, A.J. wouldn't be opposed to finding an old one, taking it apart, and showing him the mechanics. It was just a matter of whether or not he was up to that kind of mechanics.

"Both?" Seregil said. "It is a very fascinating device; I'd like to learn more about it. As well as more about this place's entertainment."

A.J. grinned at the answer. "If you ever want to break one of 'em open and see how it ticks," he offered, "I'd be more than happy to help lead you through. I'm good with that kind of thing. Engines and things, I'm a little shaky with, but electronics? I'm all over that."

"Electronics," Seregil repeated. "Devices that use electricity?"

A.J. ducked his head in a deep, approving nod. "Yup. You got it."

...Smart guy. A.J. approved.

"New words for new ideas. I have the feeling there's lots I have to learn from the this place."

"Yeah," A.J. smiled a bit crookedly for a moment, rubbing the back of his neck. "There's a good chance of that. What sort of place are you coming from?" He was getting the feeling, although perhaps that was just a symptom of the fact that he'd never heard of TV, that it might not be too far off from Beauty's sort of world, but, then again, he knew he could be completely off base on that.

"Well, magic works there and is, if not exactly commonplace, at least commonly known," Seregil said. "We don't have anything like these electronics."

A.J. nodded, adding another tick to his suspicion with magic being mentioned. "Yeah. My..." He faltered for a moment, not really sure exactly what he could call beauty, "uh, best friend's from a place with magic and no electronics. She's learning quickly, though. If that helps. I dunno, you seem to be coping okay with the differences so far, but I did kind of just meet you, and you could be, like, super-good at hiding panic."

"I've done a fair amount of travelling in foreign lands," Seregil said. "I think I've become used to how things can be very different." Not to mention, learning how to fit in was one of the challenges Nysander had given him.

"That's good," A.J. nodded, glad to hear it. "Really good. That'll be useful here."

"Where are you from?" Seregil asked. "This dimension or another?"

"Technically?" A.J. said, quirking his head and expression a little. "A different one. Well, different time. Same similar world. I'm from New Jersey, which is a state only a little bit north of here, but I'm from twelve years in the past."

"So you're visiting your own future going here?"

"Kinda sorta maybe?" A.J.'s brows frowned with uncertainty. "I think it might be a different reality. I've been too worried about breaking some sort of space-time continuum if I attempt to look myself up."
