Third Floor Common Room [evening]

Evey had found her room with little difficulty, and after tossing her bag towards one of the (thank heaven) two beds, she'd memorized where she'd be returning and wandered out to see what she might find.

And naturally, the there was the common room on her floor, with a television (granted, much older than she was accustomed to, but it would do.) And where there was a television, there was news, and ways to catch up with the fact that she was twenty years in the past.

As a result, Evey was curled up on the couch, quietly flipping through channels and trying to acquaint herself with a world that seemed somewhat different from her history lessons. Perhaps her memory was just a touch fuzzy.

"Third year," she corrected, then considered. "I suppose that's a junior here, yes."

Luke looked a little disappointed. "I graduate in a few months."

"Congratulations to you, then," she said with a soft smile.

Luke smiled back. "Thanks. Then it's back home for me. New government to start, bad guys to beat back, that sort of thing."

"New government?" Evey perked right up. "You're rebuilding?"

Luke nodded. "The Emperor kind of...um...exploded, so yes."

"...Emperor?" she repeated slowly.

"The galaxy was run by an empire for about 20 years," Luke explained. "The Emperor very humbly dissolved the republic and took over. I'm pretty sure he didn't start cackling manically until a little later. Either way, people weren't pleased about the way things were being run--oppression, slavery, people being killed and imprisoned for no particular reason, the usual stuff--so a small group of them rebelled. He died on his stupid planet-killing moon-shaped weapon last spring. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy."

And that was the most unforgiving speech Luke might ever make.

Evey's eyes had widened slightly, trained carefully on Luke's. "You sound so sad about that," she noted dryly.

She wasn't ready to share that much just yet.

"He tried to kill me," Luke said with a shrug. "We were never meant to exchange holiday cards."

She nodded. "Of course."

"It's kind of a long story and not very interesting," he said.

Which wasn't true.

"Do you have a roommate?"

Evey could certainly relate. "His name is Liir."

Luke frowned. "I don't know that name. Is he new as well?"
