The Pool, Thursday Night

Andrew had heard that there was a pool in the basement, but, not being much of a swimmer, he had never really been to see it. So armed with a towel, some water wings, and a big pink styrofoam noodle, he embarked on a quest.

It was a short quest, as the way to the pool was pretty clearly marked, and he was pleasantly surprised to find the water warm upon dipping his toe into it.

Floating there was nice. He could almost convince himself it didn't feel like like the weight of the world was pressing firmly down on his shoulders. Plus, when he slapped his palms down on the water, it made a really cool plunking sound.

John stared. "Brooke?" he croaked, because getting over Saturday was one thing. Forgetting was going to take longer. "Uh, she's in my French class. And she's my girlfriend's double."

Not expecting this reaction, Romeo lost his smile for a moment. "Then our taste must run in the family," he said, but a bit weakly. "Who is your girlfriend?"

"I assume you haven't met Jaina," John couldn't help the smile that took over his face when he talked about her. "She's shorter than Brooke but quite the fighter."

Romeo shook his head. "I should remember if I saw two Brookes, even if one were smaller," he said. "But I am happy that you are happy."

"A word of advice," John said, leaning forward a little and dropping his voice lower. "Don't mistake Jaina for Brooke. She isn't very pleased with the whole double thing and...yeah, that's my advice."

"I think I could tell the difference, if one is shorter, and ..." he paused, thinking. "But still, I know being taken for another with your face would be unpleasant. Perhaps I just ought not greet either by name, until context makes it clear."

After all, he didn't want to accidentally drag his big brother's girlfriend into a dressing room.

"Yeah, not using names? That would be how I ended up almost making a date with Brooke her first day in Fandom," John admitted.

"Did she say no?" Romeo asked, just checking.

"I pulled the offer once I realized she wasn't who I thought she was," John told him.

"And I am lucky in that, because if you had dated her, she might not have been free to see me," Romeo said, then, pausing, added, "though we are ... she says she does not want a big relationship right now."

"Ah, you're going the casual route?" John asked. "I tried that this summer with someone. It was kind of messy. But I'm sure it'll go well for you guys."

Romeo looked down, thinking. "I knew my wife, in all her life, for less time than I have already spent with Brooke," he confided. "I am not sure I can do casual. Yet..." he shrugged "I like the idea of trying to be casual, and I can hardly force Brooke into a different choice."

"You were married?" John asked, wondering if Romeo was from Hollywood or something. "I can see how you might like casual after that."

"Aye," Romeo said. "It is not a happy story."

Understatement, quite possibly, of the last 500 years, but he was in a pool and in a good mood and did not feel like wrecking everyone else's.

"So for me, casual is new."
