Andromeda campfire, Saturday afternoon

Yesterday had left Jaina with more serious thoughts than she wanted to have, so she spent her morning trying out different scenarios in the flight shed. She would have been mentally thanking Anakin for the key but she was still a little upset over that boyfriend-threatening thing, so there went that.

When she got back, she decided since it wasn't really raining rain, there was no harm in starting a campfire. Besides, the candy rain meant s'mores might be more interesting, so she brought graham crackers out from the cabin, too. Even a year later, the Turtles had made their impression.

"What? I'm sure that can't be it."

"I mean, I get better training here than I do killing things out there," Jaina said. And it would be surprising if she stopped any sort of training tomorrow.

"That's not being selfish," Inara said after a few quiet minutes of thought, "since it seems like you're getting the best preparation you can for what you know lies ahead, and may help you save even more lives later."

Months ago, even, it was honestly her reason for sticking around. But she knew there wasn't really any purpose to her staying. It all basically boiled down to But my boyfriend's not there. "I'd get a lot more with my squadron," she said. "Or even with the Jedi, wherever they are these days."

"But--you just said the training here was better, didn't you? And would training with the other Jedi take you away from your squadron as well?"

"I'm on leave from my squadron. Long story," Jaina said. "But there is always something I can be doing out there and I'm not."

"Are you thinking about going back permanently?"

"I'm sort of always thinking about it," Jaina confessed, though she really didn't want to. "But I haven't been planning on it."

"Have you spoken to Gavin or Professor Skywalker about this at all?" She ignored the clench when she thought of Gavin leaving with Jaina. "It's probably selfish of me, but I don't want you to leave, either."

"No," she said immediately. "And I'm not going to. It's my business."

"Okay," she answered just as quickly, but still curious about why Jaina was so resistant to the idea. "I was just wondering."

"I know," she said quickly. "Just a sore subject."
