The Roof; Sunday Evening.

Cal had never seen anything like this sky before in his life; he'd be damned if he didn't appreciate it. From the height of the dormitory's rooftop, the view was even better, and it also added a bit of consolation in the theory that, perhaps, if anything did erupt, he was at a bit of a high ground, even if he was pretty sure lava could manage to do quite a bit of damage to the base of a building. Maybe they were far away enough that it wouldn't matter, anyway.

But, God, it was gorgeous. It certainly did wonders to pull Cal out of the reverie that had been holding him back all day about his father. About how the last time he'd seen Milton was when they broke the news about Cal's...condition, how he'd never said a word to him after that, because he'd run away and, by the time he got back, his father had died. He'd called Tessie, but the ensuing conversation was short, awkward, and left him overly thoughtful. Sitting on the roof now with a cigarette between his lips as he took in the electricity in the air, though, he started to feel a little better.

[[ it's a roof; of course it's open =D ]]

"There was a...thing...with the school play." Cheeks turning pink? Check. Head ducking in preparation for a dive into her palms? Check. "Which was bad. And I met my best friend, which was good, but then she had to--" Run. "--move away. Which sucked."

"A t-thing?" Hinata... asked, but wasn't sure she wanted to know. It didn't sound good. "A-And I'm s-sorry about your friend."

"It was a good thing, really; she was moving someplace better." Pretty much anyplace had to be. Francine glanced down and picked at a loose thread on the hem of her shorts. "What about you? Where were you before this?"

"Konohagakure," Hinata said, "it means, r-roughly, 'Village Hidden in the Leaves'. I-It's, apparently, approximately c-comparable to this w-world's Feudal Japan."

Blink. Blinkity. Ponies. Flying ponies. Teleporting islands. "Feudal Japan?" Francine repeated slowly. (Because she wasn't even going to try pronouncing that name.) "Wow. That's a lot more interesting than Houston."

"M-Much like it, a-at least, t-though we do h-have television and r-radio. I-Is Houston w-where you're from?"

That was good. A world without tv was a bad, bad place that Francine didn't want to think about existing. "Uh-huh. I was born in Tennessee, but we moved to Texas when I was little."

[identity profile] shyest-eyes.livejournal.com 2008-06-16 04:07 am (UTC)(link)
That got an interested tilt of her head. "T-Tennessee? T-Texas?" Was Houston in Texas? Or where they different names for the same thing?

"A-Ano," she said slowly, "I d-don't s-suppose you could s-show me on a m-map sometime?" Maybe that would help?

"Sure, yeah." Francine nodded. "And you can show me where you're from!" She didn't quite have the 'your world' concept down yet. She'd heard it; she was just... filtering it through that special suburban filter that even flying ponies and active volcanoes hadn't quite yet managed to grind away.

Hinata just smiled, maybe even grinned a little. "I c-can show you that for s-sure."

Well, she could write home and ask for a map no problem.
