Fourth floor common room, Tuesday evening

Being back in the dorms after a week of babysitting at the house, Dean wasn't feeling like staying in his room. So here he was in the common room, with freshly popped popcorn and soda and a tv with bad gameshows on it.

There were worse ways to spend an evening.

Rubbing his eyes as he still tried to wake up from the nap he'd crashed into after rehearsal, Cal shuffled into the common room for something to eat, and gave a vague groan of greeting to anyone else in there.

"Anything good on?" he asked idly as he glanced toward the TV.

"Depends on how you define good," Dean said.

"I'm going to take that as a no, then," Cal said. "Usually, if it's up for discussion, odds are it isn't. If it was, you'd just say it was..."

His nose wrinkled a little, still trying to adjust his eyes to the light and he wondered if there was any leftover or anything else easy in the fridge that he could consume without anyone caring.

"Sometimes you just need bad tv," Dean observed with a grin.

"Is that so?" Cal asked, settling on just a box of cereal from the cupboard that he'd eat dry with his hands, straight from the cardboard container. He was feeling too lazy and half-asleep to bother with such civilized mechanisms like bowls or spoons or milk. He found a seat, sat down, and blinked at the screen. Images and colors were still a little slow to register; it had been one hell of a nap.

"How bad are we talking?"

"Five minutes ago they were jumping over a giant foam toothbrush. Now they're spinning them around until they are so dizzy they can't stand. Or until they throw up. Either or."

Helen had spent part of the day - after her class, of course - stomping wandering around and exploring the little town. On her way back up to her room - of course she would be on the fifth floor - she heard noises and found her way into the common room. "What is that?" she said staring at the moving images and sound coming from the large rectangular thing.

"A really bad game show," Dean said.

"That... box is called a 'game show'? Why?

"No, the box is called a television," Dean said. "It's showing a game show right now." He paused. "I'm trying to think of how to explain television."

"A box that show images and makes sound. Magic, perhaps?" Helen said, raising an eyebrow.

"Not magic," Dean said. "Technology. It's like invisible electronic signals are flying through the air and the circuits on the tv can translate them back into pictures and sound."

"Bad TV," Cal observed with a shrug, although he was still going purely on Dean's description because he couldn't pay enough attention to it right now to have any idea what was going on. Finishing off another handful of dry cereal, he tilted his head back slightly to see who he was even talking to, noticed that it was someone he hadn't met yet, and gave a slight smile.

"Hi. I'm Cal."

Six. Six new people. Although he'd talked to Ino yesterday, so perhaps now he had to start back at one.

"And I am Helen," she said with a nod of her head. "And I stilll - how do you make it do the images and sound? Is it magic of some kind?"

Cal blinked at Helen for a moment, and then snorted.

Helen.

That was his middle name.

He grinned at her a little. "That's a nice name," he said. "And it's electricity and technology. I can't really explain that much further than that, unless you want to talk about lights."

She and Viki should get together, or something.

"I do not," Helen said firmly. "That is practically the same as magic for all I understand it."

Meg was bored and had resorted to searching common rooms other than her own for entertainment. Naturally the fourth floor was the first place she checked.

"Hey," she said when she came in. "What's on?"

"People making fools of themselves on national tv," Dean told her with a grin. "Hey."

"Oooh, those are my favorite kind of people to watch," Meg said, walking over to take a seat on the couch. "My favorite to watch on TV anyways. I'd hate to see what they're like in real life."

"Yeah, harder to mock them without guilt if they can actually hear you."

"That's true," she said. "But then again they are the type of people who would do stupid things for relatively little money. That's always fun."

Cal was pretty sure he didn't know the blond girl. If he changed that, he could be up to seven (or two, depending on where you counted from), so he gave her a smile, lifted a hand.

"Hi."

"Hi," Meg said, smiling cheerfully at him. "I don't think I've met you yet."

"I don't think I've met you yet, either," Cal said back, smiling still to have that matter confirmed. "I'm Cal."

"I'm Meg," she said. "Are you new new or just sort of new? Or have you been here for a while and we've just kept missing each other?"
