Right, showing Jaina how to cook. It couldn't be too hard, John reasoned. He was not a good cook by any stretch, but he was capable of boiling water and setting timers and following directions. The whole endeavor was more about showing her what cooking entailed in comparison to making a sandwich or microwaving popcorn rather than some sort of five course meal.

And he was prepared. He'd purchased ingredients, he'd gotten out pans. There would be spaghetti for dinner, and enough for everyone.

"Okay, so first, you know what a stove is, right?" John teased, rubbing his hands together. At least he hoped he was teasing.

Smirking as he dropped the cookies on the table, John scooted his chair closer. "I can't possibly know what you mean."

"Of course not, I have no idea why I said that," she said, taking a cookie from the tray.

"I mean, what would we end the night with?" John asked, taking a bite of chocolate goodness. "Maybe I could kiss you on the cheek. 'Course, I wouldn't want to be too forward."

"Of course," she said casually, "you do realize you got farther than that on our second date. Wouldn't want to take steps back, you know."

John smiled. "I liked our second date that could be interpreted as our third."

"Second and a half?" she suggested.

"I can go with that, but someday we have to make up for the other half." Because things needed to be even.

"How exactly do we do that?" she wondered.

"We have another in-class date?" he offered.

"That does sound interesting," she admitted, because she had no better judgment when it came to things like that.

"I can't promise not to try to kiss you," he warned, because he had minimal self control when it came to her.

"I think that might possibly lead to detention," she pointed out, though she could take it. She had, after all, handcuffed him in class to work out issues.

"I've had detention for far less pleasant reasons," he pointed out.

"And it'd be worth it when you could just wait till we're in the hall?" Again, not that she'd ask him to.

"No question."

With answers like that, how could she not love him? "We'll see," she smiled.

"I've found your 'we'll sees' are very close to 'yes,' so I'm going to take that positively and scoot my chair closer next time we're in a class together," John teased.

"You're bad," she laughed. And worth the detention. "Of course, now I know to look for it."

"Meaning you'll be all the more ready to be sneaky about it," John said, waggling his brow a bit.

"You're also a bad influence." Like she needed it.

"I'm not the one who kept the handcuffs," he pointed out.

"You never know when we'll need to work stuff out," Jaina said innocently.

He stuck his tongue out at her. "Hey, I'm much better with the sharing thing."

"You are," she admitted, and she did like that. "Though I can't imagine what else we'd use the handcuffs for." The big liar.

That got a nice slow smile out of him. "I bet that brilliant mind of yours could think of something."
