Fightin' Fox Cabin, Sunday Afternoon

Dawn was trying very hard not to resent the cabins for taking away two weeks of her last few weeks living with Sam, but it wasn't working as well as she wanted it to. To distract herself (and because she had to do it if she expected to sleep anyway), Dawn was outside the cabin, drawing protective sigils on the outside of the window sills near her bunk.

Salting the inside would be next.

Lana made her way in with armloads of stuff. "Hey," she said in passing as she went to drop all of her things off on her bed.

She came back out. "I'm not going to miss this trek with all my stuff," she said tiredly. "So... what are you doing?"

"Hey. The guys should totally rent themselves out at pack animals during moving days," Dawn said, wiping some paint off on her shorts. "I mean, I'm all for women's lib and feminism, except for where it means I have to carry my own stuff. I'm putting protective signs under the windows, just in case. Can you believe it's our last time doing this?"

"I hear you," Lana agreed. "And no, it's hard to believe. I'm really just trying not to think too much about it, though it's hard with all the stuff I'm getting in the mail from the college these days. Wait... Protective signs?"

"Where are you going to school?" She asked, picking up the brush again. "Yeah, to hopefully keep any evil demons and beasties and vampires and possessed people out of the cabin."

"University of New Haven," Lana said. "I got a full ride to study forensic sceince there. Oh... well... that sounds like a good plan, I guess. Can I help?"

"Sure, if you want," Dawn offered her the paint can, "though I only have one brush, so you have to paint them using something else. They need to look like this," she pointed to the first window she'd finished. "Forensic science? Really? That sounds way interesting and kind of complicated. Why'd you choose it?"

Lana thought for a minute, then found an old rag to dip into the paint. "Yeah, there was a CSI person from Las Vegas here for a while and I took a few courses with her and then there was this other professor, Abby Sciuto, who worked for NCIS. She was great and she let me come spend a day with her. I helped solve a case, had to go back and testify and everything. Her boss was pretty impressed with me and wrote me a great reference."

"That's so awesome!" Dawn was happy to stop what she was doing to find out more about this forensics thing. "What was the case about? What was it like testifying? Was it like on television? Do you have an area where you want to specialize?"

"I'm not allowed to say," Lana said, ruefully. "It was a bit frightening to testify, but it wasn't too bad. I mean, there was no real room for interpretation. I just told what I did and what the results were. It's kind of like TV, but a lot tougher - there's no easy solve. But I love putting together the pieces of a puzzle and figuring things out."

She smiled at Dawn's enthusiasm. "I don't know yet what I want to specialize in. But I do think I'll enjoy the whole crime scene stuff."

On his way to his own cabin - he was doing a very good job of repressing its name - Ichigo just had to pass by the girl who already seemed to be decorating her cabin. He stopped for an instant and shifted his bag to his other shoulder as he observed the sigils. "Do you do commissions?"

Dawn glanced back over her shoulder at Ichigo. "Huh?"

"It's a joke," he rubbed the back of his neck. "A bad one if I have to explain it, so let's just ignore it?"

"Oh!" She'd been so absorbed that she missed the joke part of the joke. Oops. "Um, no, I don't, although maybe I should? Anti-evil murals are us? Um, hi. I'm Dawn, by the way."

"Ichigo," he introduced himself, still watching the drawings. "Anti-evil?"

"They're protective symbols," she explained, finishing off one of the sigils. "To keep some of the bigger bads out. Hopefully."

At least he was smart enough not to mention that he doubted Hollows would much mind a few drawings on a wall.

"If I understand the stories right, then that's apparently a good thing to have around here," he replied. "Maybe you should do commissions. It might get popular."

"Sure, where were you when I needed money for the prom?" Dawn laughed, swiping her hair out of the way. "I could have become a cottage industry. Which is my way of saying, yeah, it's a good thing to have a way of protecting yourself around here. Where're you from?"

Sam wasn't sure when he was going to get his stuff to his cabin, with Dad and Zoe still in kid form, but he wanted to check in with Dawn and make sure she'd gotten settled without too much trouble. When he spotted her outside the cabin, all he could do was watch her and grin. "I am so proud of you right now," he said.

"Wha? How come?" She turned around and grinned at him. "You get moved in okay? How're your Dad and Principal Wash--er, Winchester?"

She'd remember eventually, she hoped.

"I haven't moved in yet. I've been helping Dean keep Dad and Zoe from fighting," Sam said. "They're fine, just full of a lot more energy than usual. And I'm just really happy to see you putting up protections. It saves me from having to do it."

"Want me to do yours when I'm done here?" She offered, not mentioning that it was probably good practice for college and dorm rooms that didn't have huge demon fighters as a roommate in them. "I figured you and Dean had enough to do with your own cabins and your parents being all tiny."

"Actually, I'd love it if you did my cabin. I don't know when I'd get to it with everything else," he said, smiling at her. "You're the best ever."

"I try." She bounced in her sneakers, pleased that Sam trusted her to take care of the protections without supervision. "I figure you can handle the salt?"

"Yeah, I can get the inside, as long as no one bitches about it," Sam said.

"Who would complain about being kept safe?" She glanced toward her own cabin, wondering if she'd acted too hastily.
