Elegant Emu Campfire [Monday Evening]

After his one and only class today, Lee had come back to the cabins and crashed for a little while before getting tired of that and wandering out to the campfire.

He got it started pretty quickly before leaning back against a log and lounging lazily. Sure, he could have done this in the cabin but there was no fire or sky or anything like that.

It was easy to forget about things he should be thinking of, plans he should be making when they were in Australia and the weather so was nice.

After an afternoon watching the races, the Reno chocobo seemed inclined to nap ~~unless the mun gets online and says something different~~, so Romeo was inclined to let him. He wandered out of the cabin and over to the first campfire with people, still carrying the box of Liir's cookies.

"This is a nice fire," he observed, settling in against a tree.

"Think so?" He greeted Romeo with a smile. "I can do better. Actually, no I can't so I'm glad you like it."

"I could do no better," Romeo said. "There's not much call for fires at home."

He considered. "I do have a lighter, but that does no good if the thing's not together properly."

"I got by with some matches and kindling," he explained. "Benefit of a few camping trips back home."

"Were you a scout?" Romeo asked idly. "I never was. We'd have bonfires on the beach at odd times, but that's different."

"Scout?" He shook his head. "Nah, me and my brother just didn't like to stay in the house all the time. We camped by the lake a few times just to be out from under my father's thumb."

"That's why I was usually on the beach, more or less," Romeo admitted. "Out of sight, out of mind." He considered. "You were lucky to have a brother to do it with. But then, I had my cousin."

"Younger brothers are good for something," he said and grinned. "Your cousin younger?"

Romeo shook his head. "My elder by almost most a year. He's home in Verona and married now." And playing the part of the dutiful heir. "How much younger is your brother?"

"Two years," Lee said. "He acts like it's more sometimes. I just hope he hasn't burned the house down or had it coated in some sort of wrap by now."

"But you would look better by comparison if he had," Romeo pointed out, leaning back on his hands. "Though that would not save the house."

"You know, I'd probably get blamed for teaching him such bad behavior even though I've been here for nearly two years now," Lee said.

"Ah, so are you the bad boy while he's the innocent?" Romeo asked. "Families seem to like seeing things that way."

"Scapegoat's more like it," Lee decided. "You get the same sorta treatment from yours?"

"At times. I think they were mostly happy to have me out from underfoot and not in too much trouble, so they saved the lectures," Romeo said. "And of course the Montagues had to compare Ben -- my cousin -- and I."

He shrugged. "At least we're past it now, or so it seems." Largely because he had so spectacularly ruined things a year ago, but everything had an up side if you looked hard enough.

"I hope we're past it too," he said thoughtfully. "I haven't really been home since getting here. My dad's been to visit...once but I can't make myself go back there yet. Not even for a visit."

"I was home perhaps two months ago," Romeo said. "Family business. It was odd, you think things will change without you -- or perhaps that was just me -- and they hardly do at all."

"I can't imagine them here, though I suppose I'll ask at the parents' weekend."

"Parent's Weekend is a fun sort of hell," Lee said and laughed. "I spent the majority of the time hiding."

"If my father and my priest came next time, I might be looking for a place to hide near you," Romeo laughed.

"Believe me, most of us try to hide," he said. "And if your girl's parents or friends come, hiding is even better."

"Her father already doesn't like me," Romeo said. "I'm lucky she sees that as an asset."

"Yeah, I'm the same only it's the mother that hates me," Lee said. "I kinda ruined that at the graduation brunch."
