Wee Gremlin Campfire, Friday Morning

He'd woken up finding himself unable to change out of the loud, short pants Ender was pretty sure he hadn't been wearing the previous day. He wasn't going to make a problem with it, so with a minimum amount of fuss, he left his alcove and settled by the campfire outside.

Working the fire proved to be nice, simple work; for the time being, he could pretend it was enough. His notepad laid by his side. He'd return to it eventually.

Jamie had sworn he was entering the gym but now he was at a campfire. Huh. Oh well.

"Happy Bermuda shorts day people! What's going on?"

Ender looked up slowly, his hand still involved in a gentle poking of the fire. "Bermuda shorts," he said, "By the sounds of it."

"Obviously," Jamie said taking a seat. "Hence my greeting."

Jamie liked the word "hence".

"I just assumed there was something more to the world today than just shorts?"

"Not yet," Ender said, "But it's early." He let the chatter settle for what it was, pulling the stick out of the flames for the time being.

"True," Jamie said kicking his feet up on a stone and leaning back. "I'm hoping we get the matching shirts tomorrow."

Ender's eyes flicked down to his shorts. They hadn't become any less silly over the past few minutes. "I'll have to disagree with you on that," he said.

"Oh come on," Jamie grinned. "What's wrong with a little color and fun clothing?"

He wondered if the Battle School had had worse uniforms than this. "I don't have any problem with color," Ender replied, "But this looks like something a clown would wear."

"Hey, just be glad we have pants," Jamie advised. "There was a whole clothing disappearance thing a while ago."

"I'll make sure to feel grateful about it later."

"Wow," Jamie said with a raised eyebrow. "Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bunk this morning."

"I woke up fine," he replied, "I just happened to be in shorts."

"And what's the problem with that?"

Romeo casually waved to Jamie. "Good morrow. I don't suppose you come bearing coffee?"

he liked to live in hope.

"Nope," Jamie said. "But I can get some. Want the home brew or the Perk?"

"Home brew is closer," Romeo said. "Can you work a coffeemaker? I tend to come out with evil slop when I try."

It would have helped if he'd read the directions.

"Well it's not like I'll kill anyone," Jamie said doing a quick stomp of his foot and creating a dupe.

"Coffee. For everyone. Chop. Chop."

The dupe rolled his eyes and wandered off.

"So what's new with you, Montague?"

Romeo never got tired, or less jealous, of watching Jamie do the dupe trick.

"My girlfriend is a rabbit," Romeo said, indicating her with a point of his foot. "I kept my best friends from splitting up, and I am a senior in about two weeks. And the island has decided my shorts should be as bright as this shirt. And you, Madrox?"

"There's a lot of that going around. The people turning into animal thing. I'm thinking it's the water," Jamie said sympathetically. "As for me I'm dating a ninja and no one has killed me yet. Senior, huh? Junior for me. I think there's only one person who came in with me as a Freshman."

"Which ninja?" Romeo asked; the only one he knew was Ino, and while he knew she wasn't dating Liir, he wasn't sure who she was seeing.

He blinked. "You plan to go through four years in this place? How will you survive?" He was not entirely joking.

"Duplication," Jamie replied with a grin. "I figure as long as there's at least three of me running around at least one of them will graduate. And I'm dating Temari. She usually wears robes, fishnets and carries a giant fan."

"I've not met her," Romeo admitted. "She sounds interesting, at least. Has she turned into any wildlife at inconvenient times lately?"

"Nope," Jamie said shaking his head. "I turned into a dog but not during an inconvenient time. Do I want to know when your girlfriend turned into a rabbit?"

Romeo groaned. "We weren't doing anything," he said hastily.

This was technically accurate. They'd stopped when Rikku walked in. "Is there really a convenient time to become a beast?"

Jamie thought about that. "Yes," he answered. "When someone is trying to hurt you and won't recognize you in animal form."
