Wee Gremlin Campfire, Friday Morning

He'd woken up finding himself unable to change out of the loud, short pants Ender was pretty sure he hadn't been wearing the previous day. He wasn't going to make a problem with it, so with a minimum amount of fuss, he left his alcove and settled by the campfire outside.

Working the fire proved to be nice, simple work; for the time being, he could pretend it was enough. His notepad laid by his side. He'd return to it eventually.

Ender looked up slowly, his hand still involved in a gentle poking of the fire. "Bermuda shorts," he said, "By the sounds of it."

"Obviously," Jamie said taking a seat. "Hence my greeting."

Jamie liked the word "hence".

"I just assumed there was something more to the world today than just shorts?"

"Not yet," Ender said, "But it's early." He let the chatter settle for what it was, pulling the stick out of the flames for the time being.

"True," Jamie said kicking his feet up on a stone and leaning back. "I'm hoping we get the matching shirts tomorrow."

Ender's eyes flicked down to his shorts. They hadn't become any less silly over the past few minutes. "I'll have to disagree with you on that," he said.

He wondered if the Battle School had had worse uniforms than this. "I don't have any problem with color," Ender replied, "But this looks like something a clown would wear."

He eyed his pants critically once more. "They're not nearly green enough," Ender joked; it was better than causing bad blood, which he didn't need.

Ender eyed him. "You want to start a search party to find me a pair of green Bermuda shorts?" he asked.

"Like I have better things to do today," Jamie said knocking his hand on the ground a few times to create a half dozen versions of himself. "Get this guy a green pair of Bermuda shorts."

Ender's eyebrows didn't quite manage as far as his hairline. He was a little too good at containing his surprise for that. "...That's useful," he said. That really would've been useful-- he wasn't thinking like that any more.

"I'll keep that in mind," he said, watching one of the dupes leave from his peripherals. "So you duplicate yourself. How does that work?" All concerns as to tactics aside, Ender really was curious.

"I'm a mutant," Jamie said with a oh-so-casual shrug. "Or at least a form of mutant. Something in my genetic make allows me to take kinetic energy and use it to make duplicates of myself. They know what I know and when I reabsorb them I know what they learned."

There were a lot of possibilities in that, and Ender was grateful that nearly all of them didn't involve fighting at all. "Everyone must want you for their grocery shopping." He had a feeling jokes worked better on this one, no matter how distant he felt.
