Third Floor Common Room: Wednesday Afternoon

Anyone entering the common room at this time will notice that Dor is having an intensive conversation with the microwave.

"So... it's not magic?" Dor asked looking somewhat confused.

"What's the problem?" the microwave responded. "It's pretty simple. I have magnetron tube that sends out microwave radiation to heat water and other polarized molecules within food."

Dor just started at the microwave not understanding one word that it said.

"Okay. Fine. It's kind of like magic," the microwave said with a weary sigh.

Dor's befuddled expression showed that he still didn't understand what was going on.

Chad nodded. "Si. You on this floor?"

Lola shook her head. "Second. I am exploring."

"Which room?" Chad asked, and then he pointed toward the hallway. "I'm in 312 if you ever want to visit."

"232. And I think maybe I will, especially if you are playing."

"232?" Chad asked, a little bit of mild surprise in his voice. "Really? That's pretty far down there." He couldn't think of hardly anyone in the 20s, much less the 30s, but, then again, he did have a poor memory. "And, yeah, I play quite a lot in there. I don't think you met my cat, either, so you can do that, too."

"You have a cat? I would like to meet it."

"Him," Chad said, but softly, a gentle nudging at correction. "His name is Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun."

Pause.

"The Third. And he's very nice and very friendly. Purrs like a motor."

"Him," Lola acknowledged. "That is a very large name. He must be a very, ah, powerful cat."

"He likes to think so, anyway," Chad said. "I wanted him to sound noble, and it turns out that he thinks himself pretty noble, too. So it works out."

"I think many cats think that way. Do you call him by his whole name every time?"

"Nah; it's either Prince Oscar Pedro or Neko-kun. And Teddy's gotten into the habit of just calling him P.O.P. sometimes."

"They are all long names," said the girl who's native language could have one word go on for something like 20 minutes. "But so long as he knows they are all his."

"It gets worse," Chad said, with a faint bit of a grin. "Teddy let me name his cat, too, so we've got Sir Galliano Vell Crazypants Esquire."

Yup, Chad was still pretty proud of that one, too.

Lola laughed. "That is quite a name, ja. You know Teddy? He is my 'big sibling'."

"Is he?" Again, a small smile seemed to surface a little through Chad's stoicism. "You got a good big sibling, then. He's my boyfriend."

Lola nodded. "I think that he and I, we didn't . . . get up on the wrong foot?" Certain phrases clearly still eluded her. "It is my fault, I didn't always understand him."

"Get up on...? Start on the right foot?" Chad guessed, but it was marred with a little bit of a frown. "Really? That's too bad. What happened?"

Lola shrugged. "He was asking about what time and place I was from, and I told him. And he said to look out for gremlins, and I didn't know what those were, and tried to look it up, but my dictionary didn't know, either. And I think then we confused each other."

"Ah," Chad nodded; he could see how that might happen. "Did you work out what a gremlin was? Because he was right about that, they're best avoided."

"Small, green, ugly, things that bite, ja? Not like the fuzzy Fußbälle on Monday."

Chad nodded. "Right. Well. The ball things bit Prince Oscar Pedro, but I think he bit them first."

"I named one Jens. It tried to eat through my boots."

Chad glanced down...and down...toward Lola's feet. "How'd he do?"

Lola lifts her foot obligingly to show off her battered Doc Martens. "They are scratched, but it didn't win. I don't have to call my Papa for money for new shoes."

"Teddy puked on my shoes once," Chad offered, "so he bought me new ones for my birthday. If Jens did ruin him, he should do the same."
