Third Floor Common Room: Wednesday Afternoon

Anyone entering the common room at this time will notice that Dor is having an intensive conversation with the microwave.

"So... it's not magic?" Dor asked looking somewhat confused.

"What's the problem?" the microwave responded. "It's pretty simple. I have magnetron tube that sends out microwave radiation to heat water and other polarized molecules within food."

Dor just started at the microwave not understanding one word that it said.

"Okay. Fine. It's kind of like magic," the microwave said with a weary sigh.

Dor's befuddled expression showed that he still didn't understand what was going on.

"I'm sure someone has mentioned it to him," Dor replied. "Though he may be more interested in humans who can talk back to him."

"That's a good point, too," Chad agreed. "I haven't actually met him yet; all I've done is deal with some newbies who were surprised to see a unicorn."

"He's actually pretty nice," Dor replied. "Though I suppose most unicorns are. He's the first one I've met who actually talks."

"So...objects talk to you, but not unicorns. Usually."

If anyone was paying attention, they might have actually picked up on a hint of amusement in Chad's rumble of a voice there.

"Well most unicorns can't really speak. They talk like regular horses which are actually more rare in Xanth than unicorns," Dor mused. "Though there are a few animals that can speak normally. And the objects talking just happens around me when my talent kicks in."

"...you must not get a whole lot of peace and quiet," Chad observed after a moment of trying to follow through that.

"Not a lot," Dor replied. "Apparently when the inanimate can't talk they get very chatty when they actually are able to talk."

Chad grunted. "Probably have a lot to say, yeah."

"Did you ever think of jus-- No, the forest would still have rocks and stuff, wouldn't it?"

"Yeah. It's not so bad really. I've lived my whole life like this so it's pretty much normal for me," Dor replied.
