Cheerleading Exhibition; The Gym; Saturday Afternoon [ 10/25 ]

It was time for the cheerleaders to go about and do their thing in showing all the family and friends of the student body their school spirit! The gym, of course, was decorated in blue and gold, with a giant, sparkly "GO GREMLINS" banner, and there was up-tempo, bass-thumping music spilling out of the speakers as the cheerleaders got read and the audience filed in.

[[ OCD's a'coming got spirit, gold and blue! OCD's got spirit, how 'bout you? ]]

"You've really managed to change him," Nancy informed Jaina. "I only wish Patrick could see him like we do."

"He changed himself," Jaina said, but looked over curiously. "How do you see him?"

Nancy faced Jaina for a moment. "He's a great guy who'd bend over backwards to help a friend and just needs a little more direction." She turned back to the show. "Your turn."

"About the same, exactly for the direction part," she replied. "He'll figure it out."

"I hope so," Nancy shook her head. "Patrick is not going to like what he hears back from Dave."

"Why?" Jaina wondered. "He's doing well, he's not getting into any trouble, he has friends, he's happy... What's the problem?"

Nancy looked a Jaina like she was insane. "Um, has John mentioned that he hasn't applied to any colleges yet? Or that his father would go insane if he knew he was a cheerleader? Or that he hasn't said a word to his family in over a year and you say he's happy?"

"Well, gee, with all that pressure, I can't imagine why he avoids talking to them," Jaina said dryly, tucking her hair behind her ear mostly out of irritation. "It sounds like nothing but happy conversations. Has it occurred to any of you that maybe he just doesn't want the same things you want for him? Or that maybe it should matter?"

Jaina was really getting on her nerves now. "I see. Now, maybe you don't have to make sacrifices for the good of your family, but where John and I are from, that's just how life works. We don't always get what we want."
solo_sword: (biting tongue)

Jaina didn't bother keeping up the charade and let her see the eyeroll. "Back home we've been at war for two years. I have to go months at a time without talking to my parents for security reasons. I lost both my brothers on the same day. You can't talk about sacrifices and make me feel bad," she told her. "And you know, through all that, he's been with me the whole way. I think he knows a little about sacrifice."

"Obviously we don't agree on this subject," Nancy said, looking away. "Just tell me you're not the reason he hasn't given up this crazy idea to join the military"
solo_sword: (hair in face)

"I don't know his reasoning, but I hardly think it's a crazy idea. And if it's what he wants to do, then he should do it," Jaina said simply. "Better than ending up old and bitter and hating everyone, if you ask me."

"Ending up bitter and full of hate is a choice," Nancy replied. "But I'd hate to see John that way." She did have a soft spot for the guy, even with his stupid dreams of flying.
solo_sword: (and more serious)

"Then why are you encouraging him to end up like that?"

"His family is counting on him." And they were really good to her.
solo_sword: (waiting)

"His family needs to back off," Jaina stated. "Because whatever they're doing now is sort of not working."

Nancy stood on the bleacher and smiled tightly as she made to leave. "I'll make sure they know where you stand on that."
solo_sword: (chin lift)

"On his side, yep," Jaina nodded. Wow, she hated that girl. At least she didn't push her down the bleachers.
