Fifth Floor Common Room, Tuesday Evening

The fifth-floor common room had been transformed into a riot of color and sound by the two intrepid decorators. When you had Rikku and Dōjima doing the artistic design, and they were basing it off of Romeo's collection of loud shirts, it was bound to be, ah, creative.

There were balloons and streamers everywhere, and the party even had some piñatas full of candy for people to swing at. Simply because everyone (Rikku) liked candy, and Dōjima was a fan of party games that made other people look like idiots.

"Hey, happy birthday, man," Cal said, figuring that, even if he was going to be the quintessential party lurker, he should at least wish the birthday boy a good one.

"Thank you," Romeo said, flashing a smile. "I'm glad you came. Did Dojima tease you into it?"

"Oh, come on," Cal said, rolling his eyes slightly. "I'm not that bad, am I? I usually make appearances at these things without anyone badgering me into it, you know."
withoutverona: (all stubbly and grrrr)

Romeo shrugged a little, undaunted. "I've probably even seen you at them," he admitted. "She has talked you into things before, though."

"I don't really think it's talking me into things so much as it is annoying me to the point where I do it just to get rid of her for a while," Cal admitted; he wondered if that was something you really shouldn't say to someone's boyfriend, but, at the same time, what with how that whole not-a-date thing went over, it couldn't hurt to have Romeo thinking that Cal's dealing with Dojima were a strictly bothersome event.

Strangely enough, effectively calling Dojima annoying didn't actually go over that well with Romeo, though it was slightly comforting given the not-a-date thing. "Yes, well ... she's not annoying to all of us."

"And," Cal added, "she's not any worse than half of everyone else, so there's that too?"
withoutverona: (kind of hating you)

"So, she annoys you, but no more than most people?" Romeo was teasing. "High praise indeed."

Yeah, that sounded just about right. Cal gave a faint grin, to match his faint shrug.

"Yeah," he said. "Because I'm so hard to annoy as it is."

Cal didn't strike Romeo as the extremely irritable type, but it wasn't as though he knew him so very well. He matched Cal's faint shrug with one of his own.

"I'm told I might become much easier to annoy soon," he said, shifting the topic slightly. "I'm quitting smoking as -- I would call it a birthday present to myself, but I suspect it's a birthday exercise in masochism."

"You quit smoking," Cal muttered, "just as I find myself going back to it after almost two months without. Good luck, man. Here's to hoping you get further than I did."
withoutverona: (a little james dean)

"Two months is longer than I've lasted in years, but I'd never tried to quit," Romeo said sympathetically. "What has you on a relapse?"

"I didn't even mean to quit," Cal admitted, rubbing the back of his neck with a sort of sheepishness. "I just kind of...happened. I started back up again, though, when things started to get a little shaky between Amber and me..."

And that was about as close to drawing the line between smoking as a preoccupation to replace sex that Cal was going to get, if he could help it.

"And you needed something to be normal?" Romeo suggested. "I don't know if I would be able to avoid the cigarettes were that to happen to me. I am sorry about Amber, though."

Cal shrugged a little again. "It was kind of waiting to happen for a while," he said. "We're good, though. We're just probably better as friends than a couple."

He was probably better as friends with anyone when you got right down to it.
