The Deck, early evening Thursday

Dinah had hamburgers and hot dogs, some veggie platters and chips and dip, soft drinks and cake. Oh, and ice cream in the fridge inside for later.

Happy birthday, Will Shakespeare! Oh, and her too.

[very limited OCD ~~about to go~~ up!, for early justice and time zones; set before Dress Rehearsal/Previews.

Anyone welcome, even if you don't know her! I'm sticking to Dinah's thread to keep it simple.]

He pulled her close into a hug, holding on a little longer than strictly necessary before letting go. "Candles?" He took a step back. "I should probably spend more time learning the particular traditions of this time."

Like birthday presents. He had missed that.

Dinah didn't cling, but let herself enjoy it for as long as the hug lasted, then carefully let go. "You're supposed to put them on the cake, light them, then blow them out and make a wish." She made a face, then grinned. "I didn't get mine, but I got something nearly as good, so yeah. No reason to do it over."

"So, what did you wish and what did you get?" he asked, amused.

"A motorcycle! Vroooom! And I got a bicycle." She paused, then mock-seriously said, "No sound effect." Dinah grinned. "But still way cool, I have to admit, and Helena said maybe a motorcycle next year, if I paid for the insurance, and she was there to teach me."

He laughed at the sound effect, not quite sure exactly what kind of vehicle she was referring to. "So, you can now move fast, not that you are usually slow."

Dinah gave him a cheeky grin. "Exactly. Well, fairly fast. It's not motorized. But I'm thinking of getting a job in town this summer. It'd be nice to be able to zoom into work and zoom out again." She tilted her head. "Are you staying all summer, do you think?"

"I am," he said. "At least that is the plan. But I will visit home too." His gaze turned distant for a moment.

"I always used to wonder what you're seeing, when you talk about it," Dinah said, then tilted her head. "Professor Atreides showed a flight you took with your stepmother, in an-- ornithopter?" She wasn't sure she was getting the name right, after this much time. "And a worm." Dinah's eyes got huge at the memory, and she smiled. "I'd never have imagined that, no matter how many times you described it to me."

"Ornithopter, yes." He smiled. "I enjoy flying them. So did my father. So she showed you a worm?"

"The time you flew in between about four of them, just hovering there, with your stepmother scared as anything, then had to shoot up before one ate you. Teeth!" That still stuck with her, and the smell of Spice, the heat and blurred horizon of the desert. "It was amazing. Though I don't think I'd find them as beautiful as you and Profesor Atreides did."

He laughed. "Ate us? I'm sure Irulan was scared." He didn't know this particular memory, but he could imagine the sight. "You wouldn't? Perhaps not." He looked at Dinah. "Can you see why I miss the desert?"

Dinah was quiet a minute, then said, "Yeah. Even the deserts here, that I've heard about-- they're nothing like that one. Not so large, nor so hot, or so overwhelming." She quirked her lips sideways at him. "Home's home, right?"

Smiling in reply, Leto fell silent, shifting his gaze across the people around them. "So, do you and Ghani get along?"

"Yeah, she's awesome!" Dinah still had a little hero-worship for Ghanima, even having gotten to know her better over a semester. "I mean, she's been terrific help with my abilites." She smiled a little more warmly at him for that, since he suggested it in the first place. "And she's really cool besides that. We talk history and other stuff sometimes, before or after my lessons."

"That is good to hear," he said. It truly was. Dinah did need someone like Ghanima, he suspected. "Now, I shouldn't take up all your time, there are plenty of people who would like to wish you a happy birthday."

"Thanks, Leto." Dinah grinned at him, then rolled her eyes as more people walked in. "Time to go be hostess. See you later tonight!"

He gave her an amused look, then turned and left her to her other guests.
