The Deck, early evening Thursday

Dinah had hamburgers and hot dogs, some veggie platters and chips and dip, soft drinks and cake. Oh, and ice cream in the fridge inside for later.

Happy birthday, Will Shakespeare! Oh, and her too.

[very limited OCD ~~about to go~~ up!, for early justice and time zones; set before Dress Rehearsal/Previews.

Anyone welcome, even if you don't know her! I'm sticking to Dinah's thread to keep it simple.]

"Boots?" Merlin asked, giving her a confused look.

"Arthur ate mine. While he was a lion," Dinah explained. "Typical. He said he'd pay me back though."

Okay, don't think of what Francine told you about lion and pillows and porn, please? At all? ... or you can turn slightly pink even if you can keep your face calm.

"So yeah, how are you Finals so far?"

That sounded about right for Arthur. Almost apologetic, even.

"Good! I think. I've only had the one so far."

"Which one? Wait, is it Sir Minsc's-- great, Arthur's got me calling him that too." She made a face. "I had two on Monday. I think they went really well. I just have Mr. Dex's totally evil movie one left tomorrow."

Merlin just nodded along with that. Because, well, it was only polite to call him Sir Minsc after all.

"How hard could it be? It's only watching television."

"Imagine the stupidest, silliest, worst-written and worst-acted play you've ever seen. Now imagine you have to explain it somehow, without just saying 'it's crap.'" Dinah looked mournful. "That's what Mr. Dex said he was going to assign to us."

"You could always simply call it for what it is," Merlin suggested.

"I guess as long as he doesn't base our whole grade on it...." Dinah looked thoughtful, then said, "Meh. You're right. At least I can back up my opinion on why it's crap after this class. Darkest Night is way better, and that's not exactly high-brow culture either."

"...it's not?" He was kidding! Maybe.

Dinah grinned at him. "Noooo. High-brow pays for better costumes, at least." She sobered after a second. "And I asked Barbara to see if she could research, and, uh. Find out who my dad is."

"What did she say?"

"She said she'd look, but all we have is the year some guy with the first name of Lawrence might have hung out with my mom. That's... not a lot to go on. Even for my sister, who researches every public record everywhere." Dinah sighed. "Malcolm, the littlest boy I had that weekend with the kids? Said his middle name was my dad's. That's the most I've ever known about him." She looked at Merlin, then had to ask, "Am I stupid, for hoping?"

"Of course not, Dinah," Merlin said, shaking his head. "Do you think you'll hear soon?"

"No." Dinah shook her head. "She said maybe by Christmas. Maybe next year, or longer. My mom moved around a lot back then. There's a ton of places to check, under different names." She brightened infinitesimally. "Still. It's a start."

"Here's looking forward to Christmas then," Merlin said in a n attempt to cheer her up.

"Yeah!" Dinah grinned at him. "Only eight months, so, yeah." She shrugged. "Anyway, maybe a later present. I had a good time at home, whether or not that works out."

"A visit home is more than anyone can hope for on their birthday," Merlin said, nodding oh so seriously.
