The Deck, early evening Thursday

Dinah had hamburgers and hot dogs, some veggie platters and chips and dip, soft drinks and cake. Oh, and ice cream in the fridge inside for later.

Happy birthday, Will Shakespeare! Oh, and her too.

[very limited OCD ~~about to go~~ up!, for early justice and time zones; set before Dress Rehearsal/Previews.

Francine let him take her hand -- not the one that was holding the cake, mind you -- and smiled. "Your fork is always welcome here, Sir Merlin."

..............................Look, the author is getting all of her ungrammatical leading ellipses out of the way now before she gives them up entirely. It seemed like a good time.

It always did.

Kissing her hand, Merlin bowed his head low again. "I shall endeavor to only wield it in your name!"

She was too busy going googly-eyed over the hand-kissing thing to manage anything like sarcasm, but she did say, "Well, I certainly hope so!"

Merlin just grinned widely and stood up to give her an actual kiss. Maybe. Hopefully. He was going slow to ask for permission here!

He clearly had no idea how good Francine was at not saying no.

He may learn! One day... Okay, probably not.

Instead of contemplating that, he kissed her, one hand cupping her jaw. "We ought to argue over cake more often."

"Hmm. More cake. Such a sacrifice." Or more of that.

"This weekend maybe?" Good god, was he being forward about this? SOMEONE MAKE SURE HE WASN'T AN EVIL TWIN FROM A MIRROR UNIVERSE.

He can't be an evil twin from a mirror universe, silly. He doesn't have a goatee!

Francine grinned. "Without lions this time?"

"On my honor," Merlin promised, not quite pulling away from her. He really was like a moonstruck girl.

"Poor Arthur," she had to add, because she did feel bad for him.

"Poor Arthur?"

"Well, you've got to admit his timing wasn't great!"

"As if he wouldn't have made fun of me if he'd been human the whole time," Merlin pointed out, oh so casually clasping his hands behind her back.

"I'm sure he wouldn't have," Francine said, perfectly comfortable with that oh so casual move. "Okay, he would have. But maybe not the whole time."

Merlin just gave her a look for that. "He would have."

She had to grin. "Possibly. Maybe. Okay, yes. I don't think he means it, though. He's not so bad." Awkward to talk to? Yes. But not bad.

"It's his way, I suppose." Merlin grinned and shook his head. "So you've been talking to him, I take it?"

"We ran into each other on the roof last night. Not literally." With Francine, you did need the clarification.

"Really? That's odd, I ran into Katchoo on the roof as well." A beat. "Also... not literally."

Francine stiffened and stepped back a bit, almost like she'd been thumped in the chest. "Oh." She looked down for a moment that turned into longer than that. "How was she? I mean." She didn't know what she meant. "What did she say?"

Merlin ducked his head to catch her eye, but made no move to keep her close at that. "She said there was a banana split with your name on it. Is everything alright with you two?"

"Oh." Hey, gutpunch. Those are nice too, just for variety. Francine closed her eyes. "Everything's fine with her. I just suck."

"What happened?"

She hesitated, but if you stuck a bible in her hand she'd have to confess it wasn't because she thought Katchoo was keeping it a secret; if anything, Francine felt like everybody had probably known but her. "She told me something about herself I never figured out after knowing her since we were twelve, and I--" Freaked out and ran away.

"Freaked out and ran away."
