The Roof, Tuesday Evening

Temari had left. She'd left him a message, just written on paper, and he was grateful for it; at least it didn't make him feel as if some kind of teary farewell would be expected of him. He was waiting for a response of an entirely bigger magnitude, though: his request to be placed on a colonial vessel, to explore some of his own universe.

Hopefully, the bugger queen in the library was real. If she wasn't, he'd have to find out where the actual queen was buried - or search his mind to see if he just made it up. Either way, time out on the fringes would help him attain some of his goals.

Ben shouldn't know, of course, but he'd deflected that okay. If he knew Ben, then the Jedi would be too preoccupied with other things soon enough, and Ender would be able to leave in good conscience.

If they bothered to listen to him.

So Ender was back up on the roof, glancing over the rooftops of Fandom Town with no real sentimentality whatsoever.

"Fresh air," Ben said with a little sigh as he came onto the roof.

His head had felt like it was going to explode for the last few hours. He wasn't sure exactly why, but he had the definite impression his grandfather was responsible for it.

"We were in short supply of that," Ender replied, looking up. "Ho, Ben."

Ben gave him a little smile. "The stuff in my room was getting stale," he said.

"I hear opening a window works miracles."

"I've been getting nagged at for staying in my room too much," Ben replied. "Vaping two ships with one shot."

"Think a night spent up on the roof will be enough?" Ender asked, nodding his head at the spot next to him, "I predict that won't help as much."

Ben sat down. "Why not?"

"I think the roof has a reputation," Ender told him, tilting his head over. "I think Emmett will be finding some new, creative way to call me emo tonight."

"Are you emo tonight in a new and creative way?" Ben asked, smiling.

Ender shot him a look. "Emo isn't really my thing," he said, "Especially not by this century's standards."

Liar.

Ben snorted. "Want to run that past me again?"

"I'm not very interested in nail polish."

Ben blinked. "You've lost me."

"'Emo' is a 21st century stereotype," Ender explained, "It involves nail polish, long hair, and poetry. I'm not interested in any of those."

Robin had seen Ben around, but didn't think he'd ever actually talked to him. "Hi, we haven't met and I forgot have we?"

"We're in flight club together," Ben said. "You're Robin."

Ben didn't talk much, but certain things--like a talking frog--stuck out for him.

"Oh right! Sorry about that. I guess I was too distracted by the flying."

"Every week?" Ben replied, hiding a smile. "Huh. Are frogs big fliers? It doesn't seem like a natural fit, exactly."

"It's pretty distracting." Robin said. Wow he really should have paid more attention in that club. "I don't know how many frogs are, but I've been interested in it ever since Animal blew me out of a tuba."

Ben blinked. "...a tuba?"

"Yeah I fell in a Tuba when I was a little kid. But another Muppet named Animal helped me out. It was fun."

Ben was just going to stare for a while.

Robin came up on the roof with his guitar to practice a bit. He had the idea of trying some mariachi style playing.

"Hi Ender, do you mind if I practice up here?"

"Go right ahead," Ender told him, looking up. "I don't see any reason to stop you."
