Camp gym- Sunday late morning

Even with Fight Club later tonight, Jaina just seemed to like the gym on Sundays. It tended to be a really lazy day, which meant that training just seemed easier with less pressure to do other things. So she headed down to the gym, testing out the punching bag a bit before she decided it was good enough to work with. And also that today's challenge was going to be breaking it in the way she wanted it, which she was all too happy to do.

"Morning," Ben said, coming into the gym a little drenched from his daily run.

"Morning," she said, stepping back from the bag. "Busy morning?"

"It started raining about halfway around the island," he said, making a face.

"At least you don't have to worry about overheating?" she suggested, trying not to smile.

"Good point," Ben said, giving her a small smile. "And I didn't wake up in a stable this morning, so things are looking up."

"I heard about that," Jaina said, giving him a Look in return. "Is there some family tradition I don't know about?"

"Family tradition?" Ben repeated.

"If I've heard the story correctly, your dad did that too. Actually, I think the guys left him behind in the stables..."

Ben blinked. "Huh, I didn't know that. I was trying to find my cabin and got really turned around."

It was occasionally glaringly obvious how much Gabrielle had yet to learn about the Common Era world.

"Why are you beating up on a sack of grain?" she asked as she wandered in.

. . . like now, for instance.

"It looked at me funny," Jaina replied automatically, then realized that if that was a serious question, she probably shouldn't give joke answers that might lead to confusion. "It's for training."

Gabrielle took the joke in stride and humored Jaina with a smile. "You know, if you were a lot taller and wore leather, I'd almost have thought I was talking to Xena," she said, wandering closer and peering at the bag. "I've never seen anyone train on something like this before, though."

One day, Jaina decided, people would stop noticing that she was short.

Except that they really wouldn't.

"It's called a punching bag. It's just something to knock around that's not a moving target. Or if you really need to hit something that won't say 'ouch'," she explained.

Hey, Gabrielle couldn't help it if she usually heard lines like that from nearly a foot over her head.

But Jaina should probably worry about the eager look that lit up Gabrielle's face.

"You're a warrior, then?"

"I guess so," she said, worrying a bit at the look yes. "Soldier, more like." Maybe that made it better.

"Really? How long have you been one? What kind of experience do you have? Could you show me a few things maybe?" Gabrielle got more animated whenever she got on a roll like this, and now was no exception; she was bouncing on her toes, her hands flailing in vague and kind of scary gestures.

Run, Jaina. Run.

"Uh, military and... otherwise. That's a lot of flailing you've got happening there," she noted.

Wandering seemed like the best thing Rose could do just now since sitting in her bunk seemed pathetic, and she had to know something about where she was.

"Morning," she said after watching the girl beat up on the bag for a bit. She was definitely better than any of the female trainees at the Academy. This was going to be interesting.

"Morning," Jaina greeted her, looking back at the new arrival. "Haven't met you yet either."

"I'd be surprised if you had," Rose said wryly. "Just got here yesterday. I'm Rose."

"Jaina. Welcome to Fandom, then. Showing up fashionably late?" she wondered.

"Of course," she said, moving farther into the gym to inspect the equipment. "I thought it would be the thing to do."

"And the day after, you hit up the gym. You a fighter or just curious?" Jaina wondered.

Rose turned to look at Jaina, scrunching her lips a little. "It's - been a while. I don't want to think about how much I've fallen behind. You look really good though."

"Thanks," she said, actually taking the compliment for once. "If there's anything to be said for this place, it's that there's no shortage of opportunity to practice."
