Main Campfire, Tuesday Evening

Alex felt restless enough to emerge from his alcove and head out to the main campfire again. It was easier to both smoke and stay warm since it'd gotten weirdly cold over the last few days. Whatever. He was from Iowa. He was used to this type of weather.

Didn't mean he would pass up a fire.

So, he slouched down against a log, crossing his feet at the ankle and leaning back to blow smoke into the air. It was the second week of classes and, amazingly, they weren't going that badly. Of course, considering the classes, Alex didn't know how they could go badly.

He'd take the good news while he could. It didn't happen often.

"Might I?" he asked, amused by this whole conversation. "And how would you know? Can you see my future?"

"Oh yes," Rose replied. "That's my talent. Seeing into your future. But just yours, you see. So it's lucky I met you."

"Oh, very," he agreed, nodding. "Very lucky. Tell me what's in my future, then."

"Big surprises," she said instantly. "Couldn't spoil it for you, now could I?"

"Well, that's not very fair," he said and tsk'ed. "Big surprises? Can I get a hint?"

Rose started giggling. "Did you just 'tsk'? What are you, my grandmother?"

"Shut up," he said and made a face at her. "Hint. Let's hear it."

"Don't be ashamed of being grandmotherly, Alex." She grinned back at him. "And maybe that's the hint."

"You calling me a grandmother is a hint?" he asked dubiously. "Crap hint."

"You get what you pay for," Rose pointed out.

"No surprises for you," he retorted. "Too bad."

"Of course I wouldn't be surprised, I'm the one who can see the future," she teased.

"Are they good surprises?" he asked. "I don't think you'd still be sitting here if they weren't."

"Or I could just want to laugh at you when you're surprised."

"That's not it," he said, looking over at her and half smiling. "It's a good surprise. And you want to be here for it. Am I right?"

"Have you ever wondered if your idea of a good surprise and mine are similar?" she asked him, glancing back at him.

"I suppose it's a possibility," he allowed with a nod. "How would we find out?"

"I'm supposed to be psychic not an event planner, Captain!" Rose protested.

"What is your idea of a good surprise?" He'd just go the direct route.

"Finding someone more interesting than expected," Rose said. Not getting ambushed by Strigoi. The normal things.

"And are you surprised now?" he asked curiously.

She gave him a measuring look. "I was definitely surprised that you caught the marshmallow," she teased.

"Riiight." He shook his head and leaned back some. "So you've said already. That's not a surprise anymore."

"You're pretty demanding," she told him. "Why don't you tell me what would be surprising?"

"I'm direct," he corrected. "And surprising in terms of what? You? Me? Me and you? This fire?"
