Benjamin Harrison Campfire - Sunday Morning

Rose had gone for a run this morning which ended with her getting coffee down in town and walking back up to the campsite.

Now she sat outside of her cabin with coffee on one side of her and paper to maybe write a letter on the other side.  She wasn't paying attention to either though as she was kneeling in front of the firepit, trying to get the stupid thing to catch.  It should be that hard.  It didn't look that hard.  And yet, the flame kept sputtering out after a minute or two.

"Are you in need of assistance?" Worf asked.

He almost looked amused.

"It looked a lot easier when you did it," Rose grumped, glaring up at him.

"I have experience in such matters," Worf said looking a little smug as he sat down to watch. "I'm sure you will get it lit. Eventually."

She made a face at him as he sat down. "What happened to offering to help! I totally heard that."

"I didn't hear any formal acceptance of my offer," Worf replied. "I assumed that you want to do it on your own."

Rose eyed him then shook her head. "Tell me what I'm doing wrong at least?"

"I recommend more kindling," Worf advised. "Smaller sticker or dry items that will carry the frame until the larger items ignite."

She got up to move to the wood pile to grab a handful of kindling. "Okay, we'll try it. It'd be easier if it just lit on its own."

"Spontaneous combustion is highly unlikely," Worf advised here serious and... yes, completely missing the funny.

"Good to know," Rose said, trying to be serious as she started laughing. "I'm glad you came by to let me know this stuff."

"Well one could see your futile attempts could lead to a greater frustration," Worf replied. "And summer camp is intended to be enjoyable."

"They were going to work eventually," Rose protested, more out of habit than anything. She added the kindling to the not-yet-a-fire and tried to light it again. "Are you enjoying yourself at summer camp?"

Worf frowned a bit at the question. "For me it is not a matter of enjoyment. I am here to fulfill my obligations and hopefully attend Starfleet Academy."

"What happened to 'intended to be enjoyable?'," she was unable to resist pointing out. "So Starfleet Academy? What's that - spaceships?"

"I am not here by choice," Worf replied. "And yes, Starfleet is the military and deep-space exploratory service maintained by the United Federation of Planets. My adopted father was a member. I intend to join to honor him."

They had that much in common at least. "Cool," Rose commented. "Is that right after you're done here or do you have to go to college first?"

"I will have to attend the academy before I can be assigned to active duty if I intend to be an officer," Worf said with a nod. "Which I intend to do."

"So you're going to run a spaceship?" Rose asked. "Or - I don't know - fly one?"

"I intend to specialize in tactical and strategy," Worf said nodding. "Which would lead to being charge of security or being the Executive Strategic Officer on a ship or station. Does something exist like that in your group of bodyguards?""

"We have a Council that assigns guardians and makes decisions with the Court and stuff," Rose said. "But not really. Guardians usually work on their own or in pairs."

Despite her reluctance to go to the cabins, Jaina was finding herself almost downright social when she found it so easy to cut through the campgrounds to get anywhere. "Having fun yet?" she asked.

Rose poked at the now sorta-going fire. "I'm not complaining," she said with a quick smile at Jaina. "You?"

"Not bad. Last day in the cabins, so I'll be happy to get back to my actual room..." she said. "Have you seen yours yet?"

"Nope. Guess I'll find it tomorrow and get to know it," Rose said, making a face. "I'm gonna take a wild guess and say you're not a fan of this-" she waved her hand "-outdoors adventure."

"The outdoors adventure is fine," Jaina said, finding a seat. "I miss full walls. And doors. And privacy. I really think I've gotten spoiled."
