Benjamin Harrison Campfire - Sunday Morning

Rose had gone for a run this morning which ended with her getting coffee down in town and walking back up to the campsite.

Now she sat outside of her cabin with coffee on one side of her and paper to maybe write a letter on the other side.  She wasn't paying attention to either though as she was kneeling in front of the firepit, trying to get the stupid thing to catch.  It should be that hard.  It didn't look that hard.  And yet, the flame kept sputtering out after a minute or two.

Worf frowned a bit at the question. "For me it is not a matter of enjoyment. I am here to fulfill my obligations and hopefully attend Starfleet Academy."

"What happened to 'intended to be enjoyable?'," she was unable to resist pointing out. "So Starfleet Academy? What's that - spaceships?"

"I am not here by choice," Worf replied. "And yes, Starfleet is the military and deep-space exploratory service maintained by the United Federation of Planets. My adopted father was a member. I intend to join to honor him."

They had that much in common at least. "Cool," Rose commented. "Is that right after you're done here or do you have to go to college first?"

"I will have to attend the academy before I can be assigned to active duty if I intend to be an officer," Worf said with a nod. "Which I intend to do."

"So you're going to run a spaceship?" Rose asked. "Or - I don't know - fly one?"

"I intend to specialize in tactical and strategy," Worf said nodding. "Which would lead to being charge of security or being the Executive Strategic Officer on a ship or station. Does something exist like that in your group of bodyguards?""

"We have a Council that assigns guardians and makes decisions with the Court and stuff," Rose said. "But not really. Guardians usually work on their own or in pairs."

"Is it your choice to be a guardian?" Worf asked as he wondered if this profession was a voluntary position.

"Sure," she said lightly. "Lots of females choose to stay home and raise kids." Rose made a face. "Not me."

Because when those who do are called blood whores, it's a pretty easy choice.

"You chose to be a warrior," Worf said sounding impressed. "Very admirable."

"Haven't given my oath yet," Rose said, playing down the compliment though she couldn't help the small smile at it. "But as long as they let me, I will."

"When will you take your oath?" Worf asked. "Does it involve accreditation from this school?"

Rose nodded. "After we graduate, we take the oath and get our promise mark," she touched the back of her neck unconsciously. "And then we're given our assignment."

"So. It was your choice to come here then," Worf stated. "Correct?"

She was startled into sudden laughter. "No! They kicked my ass out."

Worf's eyebrows arched in surprise. "Why?"

Rose took a breath and let it out slowly. "Lissa. My best friend, one I need to protect was in danger at the school. We ran away from the school for two years. When they caught us, the school kicked me out."

Worf scowled at that. "For doing your job?"

"They didn't see it that way," Rose said, kicking at the dirt. "They said the school couldn't be unsafe. And blah, blah, blah irresponsible to take the Dragomir Princess out of the school." She shrugged.

"I have noticed that adults do not often agree with youth due to their age and lack of experience," Worf noted. "Were you able to provide proof of your concerns?"

"No," Rose said. "It's just - it's not something I can prove. And now she's back there, and I'm here."

"Is there anyone else you trust at home to protect her?" Worf asked.

She was about to say no but the image of that damn Russian flashed into her head. "He'll - they'll do their best." It went without saying that she'd do better.

"Perhaps there is a way to monitor their progress?" Worf suggested.
