Second Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

Due to Skrull invasions and cabin living, Tony was now three weeks behind on the best vampire detective show on syndicated TV, Darkest Night. And this Wednesday was the season finale.

So Tony picked up a box of goodies from J, GOB and settled in the second floor common room with pastries, popcorn and a bomb bottle of cola to catch up on the episodes he'd missed. Pastries for eating, popcorn for throwing at the screen. Given that the first episode he was watching featured a zombie invasion, he was going to need a lot of popcorn.

"Come on, are you serious? No zombie's that tough!"

"And now you can watch it." That was admiration in Jack's tone. "You have to catch me up -- which one is our vampire detective? Oh, and that reminds me -- I have a book for you."

"That guy," Tony said. "That's Raymond Dark. The guy in the preppy outfit is James Taylor Grant, Raymond's human sidekick and eyes and ears in the daylight." He held out the box of doughnuts to Jack. "A book? For me?"

Jack snagged a chocolate glazed. Eyes and ears in the daylight; he was going to have to pass that description along to the vampire detective in his life. "A book," he said. "For you. You don't have to look so shocked -- you did ask for something from 1899."

"Actually, I think you offered," Tony grinned. "No complaints here, though. What's it about?"

"Did I?" Jack wondered. "I can't complain, either. I'll go get it."

He reappeared a few minutes later, clutching a book. "It's almost new at home," he said. "Probably dated, for you, and very, very silly. I almost got Varney, but that's worse."

Tony's eyebrows went up at the title, and then he grinned. "Nah, it's a classic. I've seen all the movie versions, but I haven't read the book yet. Thanks!"

"It lasted?" Jack was a little astonished. It was a ridiculous book. "I'll have to see one of the movie versions just to see how you treated it."

"Oh, yeah," Tony said. "It's like the basis for all vampire fiction. You say 'vampire' and most people think Dracula. Horror of Dracula is the best movie version, but there's several others worth watching. I could show you them sometime."

"It will have to be a date," Jack promised. "All vampire fiction? Are there movies of Gossellin?"

"A date, then," Tony grinned. "Don't think so. Is that new in your time, too?"

Jack shook his head. "It's a few hundred years old, but it's incredibly popular. Better than Dracula, too. I'll see if I can find a copy in English."

"That'd be cool," Tony smiled. "You read a lot of vampire fiction?"

"Not in particular, but I like thrilling stories," Jack said. "Detective stories, vampires, penny dreadfuls..." He'd read anything.

"Do you?"

"Movies and TV more than books, but yeah, all kinds of stories," Tony smiled.
